History of Powerbilt

The Powerbilt brand can be traced back all the way to 1855 when a wood miller named JF Hillerich began producing furniture goods. His son, Bud, was a fan of baseball and played the sport himself. He urged his father to pivot the business towards making baseball bats and the elder Hillerich eventually relented.

Eventually, Bud Hillerich took over his father’s company. By then, they were already producing the legendary Louisville Slugger baseball bats. In 1916, Bud’s company, The Hillerich and Bradsby Co. branched out into making golf clubs.

This was the birth of the Powerbilt brand. In the first half of the century, Powerbilt would be known for making quality clubs that were staples on the PGA Tour. But by the end of the 20^th century the company was more focused on making bargain clubs for higher handicap players.

In 2016, Hilco Streambank bought the Powerbilt brand from The Hillerich and Bradsby Co.

If you don’t, it’s a bit unforgiving and you will lose a lot of ball speed. We liked the irons in this set for beginners though. They are oversized and feature a nice undercut rail that helps promote launch. The putter is also very nice.

It’s a blade-style putter so you get incredible feel for a putter in this price range. We would have liked to have seen some longer irons and a sand wedge in this set; but most beginners and high handicappers won’t miss those clubs.

Best Junior Set – Powerbilt Junior Kids Golf Club Set

Who says kids can’t have great feeling clubs? The thing that really impressed us about the Powerbilt Junior Kids Golf Club Set was the fact that the driver is forged. The set was designed for kids between the ages of 9 and 12 so for those junior golfers, it will be nice that the driver is durable.

Players this young probably won’t appreciate the feel and performance of a forged driver but as a parent, at least you know it will last a long time and be able to take plenty of punishment. You also get a nice mallet-style putter with an easy 1-ball alignment marker.

When all is said and done, the Powerbilt Junior Kids Golf Club Set includes a driver, a #5 hybrid a #7 iron, pitching wedge, putter and stand bag.

Best Hybrid Iron Set – Powerbilt Golf EX-550 Hybrid Iron Set

If you are looking for a forgiving set of irons, the Powerbilt Golf EX-550 Hybrid Iron Set would be a great choice for you. The longer irons have wider soles to increase forgiveness while the shorter irons have narrower soles so they are a bit more accurate near the green.

These irons are also outfitted with graphite shafts so you get better flex and better energy transfer from your swing. Overall, these are incredibly forgiving and long iron.

Best Chipper – PowerBilt TPS Two-Way Chipper

Selling Points:

We were very impressed with how easy this club made chip shots. It was perfect for those near-green bump and run shots. And it doesn’t take much force to get the shot shape you need. This chipper will help you get on the green faster.

Keep in mind though that because this is a 2-way chipper (one that can be used right or left-handed) it’s not tournament legal. You will also have to take some time to get used to it – especially if you have never used a chipper before. But once you do, this will become a great asset on your bag and will improve your short-game.

• A little too light
• It can produce unpredictable shots

If you’re on a budget but still need a good wedge, the Powerbilt Golf XRT would be a great choice for you. We tested the satin chrome finish wedge at 64 degrees and it performed surprisingly well. It had a good overall feel and turf interaction felt smooth.

The Powerbilt Golf XRT wedge is about $35 so don’t expect it to last season after season. It is a great overall bargain though.

The mid-mallet design of the Powerbilt Golf XRT Series 3 Putter allows more weight to be placed on the flanks of the head. This results is a great, balanced feel and increased forgiveness. The mid-mallet design also makes it a bit more precise than full or modern mallet putters.

The stock grip is comfortable too; but not too soft as to detract from the feel. We were very impressed with how well this putter gets the ball rolling so quickly, even on long putts.
