#1 – Honma TW-X Golf Balls – Best Overall Choice

Pieces: 3 piece

Material: Urethane

Selling Points:

  • Spin urethane cover
  • Firm feel
  • 326 dimple pattern

We start our list with the Honma TW-X balls which are designed for faster swing speed players. From our testing, we surmised that unless you have a swing speed of 88MPH or higher, you will not get much use from these balls on drives.

However, if you are in the faster swing speed range, you will love the low, piercing ball flight you get from them off the tee. The urethane cover allows for a great amount of feel off your short irons, wedges and even your putter too.

These are high compression balls so they do a good job of holding their lines even when you flight them nice and high. In general though, these balls produce a low/mid ball flight that lower handicap players will prefer.

Pros:

  • Great distance
  • Great control on short approaches
  • Good spin control

Cons:

  • Control is lacking in the mid irons
  • They may be a bit too hard for some

Overall Rating: 98/100

#2 – Honma TW-K1 Golf Balls – Best Premium

Pieces: 3 pieces

Material: Cast urethane

Selling Points:

  • Soft energy core
  • High speed intermediate layer
  • 85 compression rating

The TK-W1 balls are distinguished by a 318 dimple pattern which is considerably less than many golf balls in this price point. Compared to other Honma tour-grade balls the TW-K1 is softer thanks to the Soft energy core design.

The lesser dimples don’t hurt drag though. Our testers were registering excellent carry distance and even latter stage velocity on drives. One of the unique characteristics of these balls is that they suppress spin to a high degree which increases the stability of flight.

In the end, you get a mid, penetrating flight that carries even if you miss the sweet spot. While the compression rating is 85, these balls have a moderately soft feel off the driver face. With wedges and irons, you can feel the exquisite cast urethane cover grip the grooves.

Pros:

  • Great for a wide range of players
  • Surprisingly forgiving
  • Luxury packaging

Cons:

  • A bit pricey
  • Hard to launch high

Overall Rating: 97/100

#3 – Honma NX – Best For High Handicappers

Pieces: 3 pieces

Material: Ionomer

Selling Points:

  • 368 dimple design
  • High rebound soft rubber core
  • Available in 3 colors

A bargain set of golf balls from Honma is not something you will see very often but here it is. The NX balls were designed to give high handicappers and beginners the distance they need from the tee. While they lack short game performance, they are excellent off the tee and deck.

They have a comfortably soft feel with a compression of 75 (one of the lowest you will find in a Honma ball). The feel springy and play hot off the driver face. The prevalence of dimples also helps with forgiveness since the NX balls yield a straight flight path even on mis-hits.

Overall the NX balls would be a great choice if you are a high handicapper looking for aid in the distance and accuracy departments.

Pros:

  • Soft feel
  • Great rebound
  • Great for slow swing speed players

Cons:

  • Little short game performance to speak of
  • Not great for low handicappers

Overall Rating: 96/100

#4 – Honma TW-S Golf Balls – Best For Greenside Control

Pieces: 3 pieces

Material: Urethane

Selling Points:

  • 326 dimple pattern
  • Repulsion ionomer layer
  • High internal velocity core design

Pretty much the exact opposite of the Honma NX ball is the TW-S ball which puts a premium on high greenside spin and control. What makes these balls so great around the green? We honestly couldn’t tell you the technology side of it.

But from our testing, it was clear that these balls have the ability to stop dead on the shortest and most delicate of approaches. Wedge shots and chips are a dream as you can back spin these balls pretty much as much as you need to. They launch high and land dead with minimal bounce.

They aren’t too shabby with woods either. They launch low so wind disturbance should rarely be a problem. We would recommend these balls to anyone with a moderate swing speed seeking the utmost in greenside control.

Pros:

  • Low, penetrating flight
  • Moderately soft feel
  • Great for swing speeds of 85MPH and above

Cons:

  • Carry distance isn’t great
  • Dead feel on contact

Overall Rating: 96/100

#5 – Honma A1 Golf Balls

Pieces: 2 pieces

Material: Ionomer

Selling Points:

  • Lighter than the D1 balls
  • Comes in white or yellow
  • Soft rubber core

The 368 dimple pattern of these balls reduces drag very well. The result is straighter shots. If you are having trouble with a slice, the Honma A1 balls would be a good fit for you. They feature a soft rubber core that plays hot off the driver face and rebounds quite well.

The result is excellent energy transfer and preservation. These balls would also be a great choice if you prefer a soft feel or have a slow to moderate swing speed. The only knock we have on these balls is in the short game.

They yield a lot of run which is great if you are driving the ball or hitting off the deck; but on short approaches it makes these balls really hard to control.

Pros:

  • Great for slow swing speed players
  • Promotes straight shots
  • Good price

Cons:

  • Not great when the turf is dry and springy
  • Lacking short game control

Overall Rating: 93/100

#6 – Honma Future XX Tour Performance Golf Balls

Pieces: 6 pieces

Material: Polyurethane

Selling Points:

  • Gradient energy design
  • 326 dimple pattern
  • Soft rubber core

The Honma Future XX ball was the company’s first foray into a 6-layer construction ball. This is a very impressive construction that does a lot in terms of performance. The 6 layers work to preserve a maximum amount of energy which is great when you’re talking about drives and long approaches.

It also allows for more acute short-game control. The 6 layers get firmer closer to the surface and the polyurethane cover material provides a lot of spin consistency. This is a great ball for low handicappers.

Pros:

  • Great distance
  • Short-game control
  • Premium feel

Cons:

  • Pricey
  • Can be hard to find

Overall Rating: 93/100

#7 – Honma D1 – Best for Distance

Pieces: 2 pieces

Material: Ionomer

Selling Points:

  • Soft feel
  • 368 dimples
  • High repulsion rubber core

The D1 balls allow for optimized flight conditions with 368 dimples that really help stabilize the ball. They feature a special repulsion rubber core which makes them explosive off the driver face. In our testing, they were increasing drive distances by an average of 9 yards.

We don’t prefer the ionomer cover as it stymies short game feel and control. But these are distance balls plain and simple. They would be great for anyone seeking an increase in drive distance.

Pros:

  • Corrects mis-hits
  • Launches high
  • Good value

Cons:

  • Mediocre feel
  • Durability issues

Overall Rating: 90/100

Last on our list is a ball that would be great for improving performance and lowering the score for seniors and slow swing speed players. This is an impressive 4-piece ball that saves nearly all of the precious energy you put into your swing.

Our slow swing speed testers were able to crack 190 yards with this ball and the soft urethane cover was great for controlling greenside spin for all our testers

Final Thoughts

As you can see, Honma has something to offer pretty much every type of golfer. However, if you were to ask us which one ball has the most to offer the widest swath of players, we would choose the Honma TW-K1 balls.

We absolutely love the feel of the TW-K1 balls mostly because of the cast urethane cover material which, in our opinion is as good as it gets for golf ball covers. It’s great for distance and short-game control so be sure to check it out first!
