Taylormade Supersteel Burner Irons Review – Still Good And Forgiving For High Handicappers?

Yes, golf is a game of skill. But a lot of casual players don’t realize how much their gear can hold them back. Of course, if you play golf just to get outside and hang with your buddies from time to time then improving may not matter much to you.

But if you want to hone your skills, you need to scrutinize your gear. The good news is that you don’t always have to pay top-dollar for irons that will actually help you improve. Today we will be taking a look at an affordable set of irons that may  be of special interest to high handicappers.

Are Taylormade Supersteel Burner Irons Still Good?

The steel these irons were made of was said to be more resilient than standard stainless steel. This meant that the face could be milled to be super-thin without negatively impacting shot stability.

Keep in mind that the Taylormade Supersteel Burner irons came out many years ago. Since their debut, there have been a lot of advancements in golf club engineering. However, when I started hitting balls with the Taylormade Supersteel Burner irons, I could actually feel that the face played hot.

It felt very reactive and the feedback was clear too. So at least some of the claims are still true. The Taylormade Supersteel Burner irons are cavity back irons with a sizable cavity undercut. This moves the CG nice and low so anyone can launch the ball high.

The Taylormade Supersteel Burner irons also feature a “weight bar” that goes around the perimeter of the head. This feature was designed to make the club head more stable on off-center strikes. Indeed, when I missed the sweet spot, I didn’t feel the head twisting very much.

But that didn’t surprise me too much given the size of these irons. The Taylormade Supersteel Burners are beefy. They have thick soles, they’re long from toe to heel and have a pretty deep face profile.

They also launch high. They have relatively weak lofts which should be a good fit for moderate swing speed players. The Taylormade Supersteel Burner irons hold up surprisingly well to modern game improvement irons. They don’t have the cleanest look at address and the dispersion could be tighter; but the distance and forgiveness are still strong assets.

Are the Taylormade Supersteel Burner Irons Forgiving for High Handicappers?

It’s quite simple: when you have a large hitting area on the face, you are less likely to see your ball go flying into the woods. The Taylormade Supersteel Burner irons are excellent fairway finders. They will keep you out of the trees; but the dispersion isn’t as tight as some modern game improvement irons. With the 7-iron, my average off-line divergence was 12.3 yards.

The good news is that it was 12.3 yards to the left which is right in line with my slight draw tendency. This meant that I could take my natural swing  with the Taylormade Supersteel Burner which made me more confident in subsequent swings.

And when you swing confidently, you usually end up with better distance. That’s exactly what I experienced with the Taylormade Supersteel Burner irons. With very little effort, I was able to smash the 7-iron for 174 yards of carry.

I can only imagine what my average carry would have been like if the Taylormade Supersteel Burner irons played just a tad starighter. But the important thing is that I wasn’t mis-hitting with these irons.

I feel like the Taylormade Supersteel Burner irons will allow high handicap players to take their natural swing and get excellent results. They are easy to swing, don’t take much time to get used to and play long – all good things for high handicappers.

Taylormade Supersteel Burner Vs Taylormade Aeroburner Irons

“The Aeroburner irons have cleaner lines and just look more pleasant behind the ball.”

They also offer comparable distance to the Taylormade Supersteel Burner irons. But that is less an indictment of the Taylormade Supersteel Burner irons than it is a compliment. That’s because the Aeroburner irons came out much later than the Taylormade Supersteel Burner irons. So a much older set of irons holds up to newer Taylormade irons. And you can get the Taylormade Supersteel Burner irons for cheaper.
