Is the Taylormade Burner Superfast Driver Still Good? Is it Forgiving for High Handicappers?

“The Taylormade Burner Superfast driver made its debut in 2011 and before it actually hit markets, it deeply divided the golf world.”

I remember the months leading up to the release of the Taylormade Burner Superfast driver. Message boards and forums (keep in mind this is in late 2010) were lighting up with golfers slamming the Taylormade Burner Superfast as ugly and unplayable.

Mind you, this is before the driver even hit shelves. People simply didn’t like the way it looked. But I also remember a lot of those complaints fizzling out when the Taylormade Burner Superfast actually became available.

The Taylormade Burner Superfast is a distance machine and was made to be as light as possible. So eventually, it won people over despite the unconventional design. But is the Taylormade Burner Superfast driver still worth it in 2023? Let’s talk about it.

Is the Taylormade Burner Superfast Driver Still Good?

“The Taylormade Burner Superfast driver has a special terraced sole that helps save weight.”

The sole almost looks like it has vents installed in it which is what put so many golfers off back in 2010. I’ll admit it does look a bit odd; but it’s not an issue when you are actually driving. The crown looks nice anyway. It’s got a white, non-glare finish that stands in stark contrast to the black face.

The Taylormade Burner Superfast also has a large, 460cc head. It actually looks even bigger than 460cc at address. Overall, the Taylormade Burner Superfast was designed to be lightweight. The head is only 270 grams and the stock shaft is also very light. When I took a few warm-up swings, I could feel the head zip through the air. I felt like I could easily swing out of my shoes with this driver.

There’s no mistake about it: the Taylormade Burner Superfast was built for distance. In very short order I achieved an average drive distance (carry) of 256.6 yards. Perhaps more importantly though is that I was repeating that distance (give or take 4-5 yards) consistently.

The sweet spot also feels massive on this driver. I got tired quicker than normal during testing because I was swinging so hard and so fast. And I was only able to swing so aggressively because I felt like I couldn’t miss face-center – and I rarely did.

Even when I was trying to catch the heel or toe, it was a struggle to do so. When you do make contact outside of the hitting zone you do lose quite a bit of speed. But it is honestly very hard to miss face-center on this thing. In terms of pure distance, the Taylormade Burner Superfast is absolutely still a good driver.

Is the Taylormade Burner Superfast Forgiving for High Handicappers?

“Your dispersion and ball speed will take a significant hit when you miss the sweet spot.”

But again, it is really hard to do that. In addition to a naturally large sweet spot, the Taylormade Burner Superfast driver features inverted cone technology. When I learned about the ICT, I immediately understood why I struggled so mightily to hit a toe-side shot. The ICT stretches the sweet spot out towards the toe.

This helps protect your ball speed on all but the most egregious mis-hits. The Taylormade Burner Superfast looks massive behind the ball. I think the white crown actually makes it look bigger than it actually is. In any case, the Taylormade Burner Superfast will fill you with confidence at address.

The Taylormade Burner Superfast is definitely good for high handicappers. In fact, I would take it a step further and say that it’s a good driver for beginners as well. The Taylormade Burner Superfast will give you the distance you need off the tee. It is consistent, offers reasonably tight dispersion and perhaps best of all, you don’t need a fast swing speed to unlock the distance potential.

Taylormade Burner Superfast Vs Taylormade SIM2 Max

“The SIM2 Max driver is actually more forgiving than the Taylormade Burner Superfast.”

There was no mis-hitting at all with the SIM2 Max. However, the SIM2 Max doesn’t feel as light or as smooth as the Taylormade Burner Superfast. And while the SIM2 max also offered consistent distance, it ultimately didn’t play as long as the Taylormade Burner Superfast.

Taylormade Burner Superfast First Impressions

“My first thought was that this was a massive driver.”

Again, I think the white crown makes it look bigger. I also noticed that the white crown/black face contrast made it easy to frame the ball – a helpful effect that players of all skill-levels can appreciate.
