Choosing between different sets of irons is hard enough. Some manufacturers make it even harder by offering sets in the same exact line as others, just with slight construction variances. This is the situation we are faced with when comparing the Taylormade P790 and P790ti iron sets.

At a glance, there isn’t much that separates these two sets. Even after testing them, we found them to be similar in most regards. Still, there are some key differences that you should know about before you pull the trigger on either of these sets and we are going to tell you all about them.

 

Overview Of Both Iron Sets

The P790 irons were launched in August of 2019 and were released into the Players category of irons. Shortly thereafter, the P790ti variants were introduced as Taylormade shifted focus to the ultra-premium club market.

Both the P790 and P790ti clubs play long and provide forgiveness. The difference, much like the devil, is in the details.

 

Taylormade P790 Key Features

The standard P790’s feature a forged design and Taylormade’s Speed Foam, which is a thin layer of urethane injected right into the head.

These features work in tandem to increase ball speed while at the same time dampening harsh vibration.

Progressive inverted cone technology increases the size of the sweet spot by reducing spin on off center hits.

The P790ti basically has all the same features as the standard P790.

The main difference though, and this is a biggie, is that the P790tis feature a hollow titanium head design.

The P790ti’s also have a machined construction as opposed to forged, and a rear-oriented tungsten weight bar while still incorporated the progressive ICT.

 

Who Is Each Set for?

The Taylormade P790ti irons are for anyone who is in the market for a set of ultra-premium irons.

Overall, they are more forgiving as well for better players who want maximum accuracy.

The standard P790’s would be better for anyone looking for more workability from their irons.

 

Analyzing the Differences

First the obvious stuff. When you look at the P790 and P790ti’s you will immediately notice that the P790ti’s sole is wider and there is more offset for higher handicappers.

They both feature Tungsten weight bars but the standard P790’s has it further up in the head while the P790ti’s tungsten bar is visible in the back bar of the head.

What most of this translates to is that the P790ti’s launch higher and they are slightly more forgiving.

Composition Comparison

Again, both of these iron sets feature Speed Foam injection and tungsten weighting.

The main composition differences are in the head and face material.

The P790ti features a hollow titanium head design and titanium face while the P790 features a forged face.

 

Performance Comparison

In terms of pure distance, we were getting about 3-6 extra yards from the long irons in the P790ti set.

The P790ti’s were also slightly more forgiving with their wide soles and rear-oriented tungsten weighting.

In terms of feel, it was a wash. We liked the forged feel of the P790’s but the speed foam in both irons is really what came through the most.

 

Price Comparison

There is quite a wide chasm in terms of price between these two iron sets.

While a complete set of the standard P790’s will cost around $1,400, you’re going to have to fork over around $2,500 for the P790ti’s.

Final Assessment

So which irons should you buy between the Taylormade P790 and the P790ti’s? Well, obviously, if you are left-handed you don’t have a choice. Go with the standard P790’s. However, if you’re right-handed and can afford the extra money for extra forgiveness, go for the Taylormade P790ti’s.

They just provide a little more of everything that the standard P790’s do. Thanks to the larger sole and the tungsten bar that sits in the back of the head as opposed to the front, they are even more forgiving. They play longer than the P790’s and they provide more distance and stability so check them out first, while the P790s will be great for a mid handicapper looking for more ball control.
