Is Walter Hagen A Good Golf Brand? – We’ve Reviewed Their Clubs

Walter Hagen is considered one of the best golfers to ever play the game.

So you would think that any golf club that bears his name would be equally prestigious. Today though, the Walter Hagen golf brand is not a major player in the market.

However, that doesn’t mean their clubs aren’t worthwhile. In fact, many golfers purport that Walter Hagen golf clubs are as good as any currently being produced by big OEM’s like Taylormade and Callaway. Walter Hagen golf clubs are also more affordable than clubs made by major manufacturers.

I wanted to cut through the rumors and see for myself if Walter Hagen clubs were any good so I tested some of their most popular models. If you are wondering if Walter Hagen golf clubs are worth your time and money, read the following brand review.

Walter Hagen was an 11-time majors champion and is considered one of the best players in the sport’s history.

He is also credited for bringing the sport of golf into prominence in the United States.

His name is one of the most recognizable in the sport and he established a line of clubs and products in 1928. Today, the company is owned by American Sports Licensing, LLC and sells its products worldwide.

Walter Hagen T3 Golf Clubs Review

The Walter Hagen T3 golf club set consists of a 10.5 degree driver, fairway wood, two hybrids, irons 7-PW and a mallet-style putter.

All of the clubs save for the putter come with graphite shafts.

I like the fact that the Walter Hagen T3 golf club set featured lightweight clubs. This makes them a great option for high handicap players who want to increase their swing speed.

The driver has an oversized profile and offers good forgiveness in every section of the face. The fairway wood is very easy to launch, although I had some trouble with digging when I was playing off the deck.

The hybrids are very easy to hit with and produce pretty good distance. The irons sport shallow cavity backs; but their overall profile is very large. Heel-side mis-hits produced very erratic ball flight; but it wasn’t hard to avoid those kinds of shots. Plus, the wide soles on these irons make for very smooth play through the rough. And as a high handicapper you may find yourself in the rough more often than not so these irons could be a big help.

I didn’t like the fact that the putter didn’t give clear feedback. But I did like that it felt substantial throughout my stroke. I felt like I had good control over the club head and that it accurately transferred energy into the ball. As a result, I could gauge distances accurately and sink putts with precision.

Who is it for?

The Walter Hagen T3 golf club set would be a good choice for golfers who are struggling to increase their swing speed. Overall, this is a lightweight set that will add a lot of forgiveness to your bag – just don’t expect any workability.

Walter Hagen XLR Golf Clubs Review

The Walter Hagen XLR golf club set includes a driver, fairway wood, two hybrid clubs, irons 7-PW, mallet-style putter and a cart bag.

The driver looks massive behind the ball so you feel like you can’t miss. It produces a bit of a tinny sound; but more importantly it plays long. I was able to manage an average distance of 159.7 yards with this driver.

The fairway wood also sounds and feels a bit thin. But I was actually able to work the ball a bit off the tee with it. It was producing some very nice, high draws for me and helped me eliminate the right side of the fairway.

The hybrid clubs take the place of long  irons which I’m not a huge fan of but I know it can be a huge benefit to higher handicap players. In any case, the hybrids are easy to swing and they yield fairly tight dispersion – you aren’t likely to find yourself in the weeds with these hybrids even if you’re a beginner.

The irons are pretty massive. They seem to stretch on forever from heel to toe. They have deep cavity backs so the CG is nice and low in the club head. These clubs are also very comfortable and easy to swing; but there is a severe lack of feedback. For the most part though, that didn’t hinder their performance.

I was very impressed with the way the putter displayed almost no rollout lag. The ball started its forward roll almost immediately with only very quick skipping.

Who is it for?

The Walter Hagen XLR golf club set would be a good choice for anyone looking for an entry-level set of clubs at a great price.

Walter Hagen MS2 Golf Clubs Review

The Walter Hagen MS2 golf club set includes a 460cc driver, 3-wood, #3 hybrid, #4 hybrid, #5 hybrid, irons 6-PW, a putter and a stand bag.

The fact that this set includes three hybrids should tell you who it was made for.

The Walter Hagen MS2 set is great for beginners or anyone who struggles with their long irons. The hybrids are very forgiving and play straight almost anywhere you make contact on the face. The driver produces really high launch (too high for my swing) and has a sweet spot the size of Texas.

The irons have moderate-width soles but still sport an oversized profile overall. They are cavity back irons that keep the ball stable even when you miss the sweet spot. For me, the Walter Hagen MS2 irons produced a very slight draw even though the spin rates were relatively high. So if you’re a beginner, you’ll have to be careful about spinning the ball into the trees. But I suppose that’s why this set eliminates the long irons altogether.

The putter felt a bit awkward at first and didn’t provide a ton of feedback. The rollout was delayed considerably as well. Still, the alignment markers are handy and went a long way toward helping me frame the ball.

Who is it for?

The Walter Hagen MS2 golf club set would be a solid choice for pure beginners. It’s inexpensive and provides forgiveness that rivals clubs made from Taylormade and Callaway.

No. Will they help you learn and enjoy the game of golf as a beginner? Absolutely. Walyter Hagen golf clubs are good because they are designed specifically for beginners and high handicappers – no one else.
