The Taylormade P790 2 iron has a great feel thanks to the 8620 mild carbon steel construction. It also sports a forged L-shaped face insert that increases forgiveness on low-face shots. The best thing about this 2 iron is the distance.

The forged face insert  works with the Speed Pocket to launch the ball fast and low. This iron is set to 17 degrees of loft so it’s perfect for achieving a low, penetrating trajectory. The P790’s are slightly larger than the P770’s too so this 2 iron will be a bit more forgiving.

Even still, the P790 2 iron has a muscle back design so you still get the feedback and feel of a premium iron in a forgiving package.

Titleist calls this their utility iron lineup. The U510 2 iron is set to 18 degrees of loft which is slightly on the high side. As such, it launches a little higher than some of the other 2 irons we will feature on this list. We would recommend this 2 iron to anyone that normally doesn’t have to face windy conditions.

This is also a surprisingly forgiving iron. The widened sole and unique shaping allow for lower CG and congenial launch conditions off the deck. In fact, we would go as far as to say that it is most beneficial for fairway shots.

Lateral workability is a bit lacking but you can shape the trajectory of your shot relatively easily with this 2 iron. Distance was no problem as most of our testers were getting max distances of about 230 yards.

• Difficult from the tee

#3 – Cobra Golf 2020 King Utility 2 Iron – (Best Budget)

The Cobra King 2 iron is set to 17.5 degrees but you can adjust the loft higher or lower as well. It features a muscle back design and the Pwrshell face architecture that essentially adds torsional stiffness and stability.

This is a great asset on full swings from the deck or the tee. From the tee, our testers were averaging drives of 240 yards! This would be a great choice for anyone looking to maximize their distance either from the tee or on long fairway shots.

The tungsten weighting gives this iron a nice, balanced feel throughout t your swing, on impact and on your follow through. While the Cobra King Utility 2 iron is a bit on the pricey side, you are paying for durability. You can just feel that this iron will last you season after season.

#4 – Srixon Golf ZX Utility Iron – (Best Srixon)

The Srixon ZX series of irons has impressed us quite a bit in 2022. The ZX7 irons have a premium feel that rivals models from companies like Mizuno and PXG. With the ZX 2 iron, Srixon continues this trend towards premium appointments.

The ZX utility 2 iron has a forged carbon steel body, multi-piece hollow body construction that houses tungsten weights for power and low CG and even a milled back side to reduce weight and increase ball speed. You also get a very stable feel despite this being a multi-piece construction iron.

The face has been forged as well to improve the consistency. You can expect low launch and high ball speeds so long as you hit this iron moderately accurately. This would be a great choice for any low handicapper looking for a good combination of accuracy and distance.

#5 – Taylormade Tour Burner #2 Single Iron – (Best Old School)

If you are looking for an old-school 2 iron that will yield incredible distance, this is the one you should take a good look at. The Tour Burner 2 iron has a cavity back design and Inverted Cone technology that effectively expands the sweet spot.

In addition to incredible distance, this is a remarkably forgiving 2 iron. Our high handicap players were still able to get 210 yards off the tee with this iron. The sole width is also more congenial for mid to high handicappers than standard 2 irons.

Turf interaction was smooth and kept things very stable even when playing from the rough or particularly tall turf. Overall, we would recommend this 2 iron to mid handicappers and even high handicappers who want to learn how to use longer irons.

• Very forgiving for a 2 iron
• You can get it for relatively cheap
• Launches higher than most 2 irons

• Workability is lacking
• Sound and feel at impact aren’t very satisfying

Last but not least is the Mizuno 2018 MP-18 MMC Fli Hi Iron. The Mizuno 2018 MP-18 MMC Fli Hi 2 iron is set to 16.5 degrees so it yields a traditional low launch for a 2 iron. The hollow body design allows for higher ball speeds as the face is allowed to flex a bit more.

At address, you get a classic player’s performance iron look. The shortened blade, thin top line and compact head play off the anti-glare satin nickel finish for an amazing look. This is definitely a solid choice for low handicappers. Keep in mind though that this is a 16.5 degree 2 iron.

It should also be noted that you will need a fast swing speed in order to get adequate distance out of them. While our fast swing speed players (averaging 105MPH swing speeds) were able to blast out 239 yard drives with this irons, our slower swing speed testers struggled to break 200 yards with it.

Pros:

• It’s a great iron for fast swing speed players
• Lateral workability is excellent
• Great choice for shorter, tighter par 4’s

Cons:

• Really hard to get the ball airborne if you have a slow or even moderate swing speed
• It’s a bit on the heavy side

Final Thoughts

A 2 iron can be an amazing replacement for your fairway woods and may even be a better option for some drives. Our testers were effectively utilizing the 2 irons tested for this list on short par 4’s from the tee.

However, you need to keep in mind the conditions you usually play in and your own swing style. Almost all of the 2 irons on our list are better-suited for players with swing speeds of 98MPH and above.
