Titleist T200 vs Taylormade P770 Irons Review & Specs 2023

If you’re a mid to low handicapper in the market for forged irons, you’re off to a good start. Forged irons offer incredible feel and consistency.

They are the next logical step when you are trying working your handicap down from mid to low.

Still, it can be tough choosing between two of the top forged iron manufacturers in the world: Titleist and Taylormade.

Both have a reputation for making performance forged irons so how do you choose between the two?

Take a look at the following comparison review and let us make your decision a bit easier for you.

Overview Of Both Club Sets

The Titleist T200’s are the successor to the AP3 forged irons. The T200’s are meant to sit between the AP1 (a great distance iron) and the AP2 (a tour-caliber iron). As such, the T200’s deliver on distance and forgiveness.

The Taylormade P790’s were a hit because they played long and performed the way forged irons should in the short game. The P770’s are smaller profile irons but they still pack a considerable punch for a player’s forged iron set.

Taylormade P770 Key Features

The Taylormade P770’s have an irresistibly sleek muscle back design.

They look clean, sport a compact profile and are player’s irons through and through.

It has a forged hollow body design made of soft carbon steel and there is up to 46 grams of tungsten weighting in the long irons.

The main thing to not with these is that they have a players shape for mid to low handicappers.

Titleist T200 Key Features

The Titleist T200 irons have a shallow, modified cavity back design.

This design is in part, to accommodate the unique polymer core that helps dampen vibration and the heel and toe tungsten weights lodged inside the heads.

What’s Better About Each Set?

The great thing about the T200’s is that they strike a better balance between performance irons and distance irons.

The forged face is super-thin, responsive and hot and the cavity back design will be more congenial to mid handicap players.

What’s better about the Taylormade P770’s is that they look amazing. They just beg to be swung. It’s not all about looks though. They preserve ball speed very well across the face and the 4140 steel carbon also gives them a superior feel.

Who Is Each Set For?

If you are looking for a bit more distance then you would be better off with the Taylormade P770’s. They have a hotter face and the progressive tungsten weighting puts the oomph where it needs to be in the long irons.

The Titleist T200 would be better suited for players looking for a bit more forgiveness. The L shaped forged face helps increase forgiveness on low shots.

The Taylormade P770 Vs. the P790

In terms of distance, these irons are almost equal. Yes, you will get about 2-3 more yards out of the P790’s but they lack the player’s profile that the P770’s boast.

The P770’s also have a softer feel than their bigger brothers but are also less forgiving for higher handicappers.

Both irons represent a lovely set of sticks.

Titleist T200 Vs. Titleist T300

The T300’s also have the special polymer core that dampens sound and vibration that the Titleist T200’s do.

The main difference is that the T300’s sport a weaker loft so their launch angles are a bit lacking.

Composition Comparison

The Taylormade P770’s are infused with a layer of urethane foam to help dampen unwanted vibration. They also feature a hollow body forged design. The face is made of 4140 stainless steel while the body is made of soft carbon steel.

The body of the Titleist T200 irons are actually cast and the face is forged. It’s a wrap-around, L shaped face to promote forgiveness. The T200’s also pack about 20 grams more of Tungsten in the long irons than the P770’s.

Performance Comparison

We really liked the distance and feel we were getting from the P770’s. They were just funner to hit too.

However, they are certainly more for players who are already entrenched in the lower handicaps.

The T200’s were more forgiving even with their compact head profile.

Price Comparison

You can pick up a set of the Taylormade P770’s for about $1,400 while the Titleist T200 typically retail for $1200-$1300.

Final Assessment

So which forged irons came out on top at the end of the day? It may be superficial but we really liked the looks and feel of the P770’s.

They played longer and even though they are a bit more expensive, we think low handicappers will really like them.

That being said, if you are trying to work your way down to a single-digit handicap, the forgiveness of the Titleist T200’s will suit you better.

Overall though, we think the Taylormade P770’s are the higher quality forged irons so check them out!
