Taylormade Stealth HD Vs Ping G430 Irons Comparison & Review 2023

When it comes to producing forgiving clubs, Taylormade and Ping have been two of the most competitive companies in the industry.

“With the Ping G430 and the Taylormade Stealth HD irons, we see the companies taking diverging paths to forgiveness.”

The Taylormade Stealth HD have more of a “niche forgiveness” slant to them. They are geared towards players who want to hit high draws more easily, hence the “HD” nomenclature. The Ping G430 irons on the other hand attempt to appeal to a wider game improvement audience.

I personally know both Taylormade and Ping to produce some of the best game improvement clubs in the market so I was really eager to test the G430’s and Stealth HD’s side-by-side for this review. Let’s get started!

Taylormade Stealth HD Irons Overview

Taylormade Stealth HD Irons

“The Taylormade Stealth HD irons have a large overall profile even though the face depth is shallow.”

The faces are shorter from top to bottom than the Ping G430’s; but this allows the blade length (heel to toe) to be longer. Overall, these are big-looking irons at address. In fact, to me, they have more of a hybrid-iron look.

But for how much bigger they are compared to the Ping G430’s, I was surprised to see that the Taylormade Stealth HD irons have only slightly weaker lofts. You can see the exact loft specs in the tables near the end of this write-up.

The Taylormade Stealth HD irons also have massive soles. This helps with the advertised “ultra-low CG.” The thick soles combined with the pronounced offset give these irons a very assuring look at address for high handicappers.

“The Taylormade Stealth HD irons certainly offer a high degree of forgiveness and can help you avoid slicing with your mid and long irons.”

Ping G430 Irons Overview

PING G430 Irons

“The Ping G430 irons have a more traditional look than the Taylormade Stealth HD’s: thinner top line, thinner sole, deeper face profile and less offset.”

These are by no means butter knives; but compared to the Taylormade Stealth HD’s, the Ping G430’s have a compact profile. Their 17-4 stainless steel faces have been milled to be very thin and indeed, dead-center strikes feel very responsive and produce great distance.

But the Ping G430’s are predicated not just on distance; but forgiveness as well. This is evidenced by the extreme perimeter weighting in the shaft tip and toe screw. And during my testing, I intentionally used the whole face and my ball speed didn’t drop very much on heel or toe-side mis-hits.

The Ping G430’s don’t launch as high as the Taylormade Stealth HD’s and they don’t have internal draw bias. For the most part, I was getting a lower, straighter shot shape out of these irons compared to the Taylormade Stealth HD’s.

“When hit in the center of the face, the Ping G430’s yield amazing distance. Mis-hits also yield playable lies.”

Overview Conclusion

“There is a bit more utility in the Ping G430 irons than the Taylormade Stealth HD’s.”

While the Taylormade Stealth HD irons will certainly help straighten out your slice, they aren’t as overall forgiving as the G430’s. For instance, thin shots with the Taylormade Stealth HD’s produced poor ball distance and dispersion while the same shots with the G430’s lost hardly any ball speed and still found the fairway.

Who Should Buy the Taylormade Stealth HD Irons?

Taylormade Stealth HD Irons2

“The Taylormade Stealth HD irons are ideal for players who struggle to get their balls airborne and stay on the fairway.”

The launch is pretty much automatic in these irons. They can help keep you near the line if you tend to slice; but they’re certainly not the best irons for players who already hit the ball straight.

Who Should Buy the Ping G430 Irons?

PING G430 Irons1

“The Ping G430’s are better for your average mid to high handicapper.”

I would recommend these to any player in the 14-22 handicap range. They are forgiving all over the face; but they aren’t the best irons if what you need the most is height on your shots.
