PXG 0311 Gen 6 Drivers Review – Regular Vs XF Vs Gen 5

“Parsons Xtreme Golf has never ceased to amaze us. In very short order, they have become one of the top premium golf club OEMs in the industry.”

They have always done things a bit differently too – like releasing new golf club lines later in the year. But they have finally unleashed the PXG 0311 Gen 6 drivers and we had an opportunity to test them.

Again, we have always known PXG to make premium, high-end drivers. So much so that it almost seems unfair to test them against drivers from other companies. So we thought it best to simply use the previous Gen 5 drivers as a control against the new PXG 0311 Gen 6 drivers.

In the following comparison review, we will be revealing the performance differences between the Gen 6 and Gen 5 drivers.

The PXG 0311 Gen 6 Driver in 50 Words or Less

“The PXG 0311 Gen 6 driver bears a slightly different shape from the Gen 5. However, it is still a beast in terms of distance.”

The PXG 0311 Gen 6 drivers come in a standard and XF version and both are highly adjustable.

First Impression on the Range

“My first impression when I put the PXG 0311 Gen 6 behind the ball was that it looked smaller than it really was.”

Before testing, I looked up all the stats and knew that this was a 460cc driver. When I got it behind the ball, I thought I had the wrong club. The PXG 0311 Gen 6 driver has a sleek, compact look thanks to the redesigned shape which we’ll get into a bit later.

The PXG 0311 Gen 6 driver is a distance machine. After just two swings with it, I was crushing the ball over 260 yards (carry). It does look a little intimidating because it looks smaller than 460cc; but after one or two swings you will feel completely at ease – at least, I did.

The sound of the PXG 0311 Gen 6 driver isn’t insanely loud either which is something I like. I hate testing a really loud driver that calls attention to my shot at the range – especially when I am swinging poorly. It produces a mid frequency whacking sound that doesn’t change very much when you mis-hit.

What’s New With the PXG 0311 Gen 6 Drivers?

“As far as features go, there actually isn’t a whole lot that’s new in the PXG 0311 Gen 6 drivers.”

The Gen 6 drivers have the same fully carbon carbon crown, titanium/elastic modulus face construction, adjustable hosel and even moveable weight ports as the Gen 5 drivers.

The most significant difference in my opinion is the shaping of the driver. The PXG 0311 Gen 6 driver (standard) has a “tear drop” shape that looks a bit more symmetrical than the Gen 5 standard driver. The PXG 0311 Gen 6 XF also has a more elongated head shape from front to back than the Gen 5.

I also noticed that the face of the PXG 0311 Gen 6 driver was a bit deeper than the Gen 5’s standard version. And while it may seem like an insignificant difference, I believe it’s still worth noting: the PXG 0311 Gen 6 drivers have a matte black crown whereas the PXG 0311 Gen 5 drivers had more of a glossy finish.

To me, this actually makes a considerable difference because I noticed that the crowns of the new PXG 0311 Gen 6 drivers don’t catch the sun as much as the Gen 5 drivers. This makes them less distracting at address.

However, these are all the things that I noticed with the naked eye. PXG claims that they have improved the Gen 6’s CG and variable face thickness design. But these claims could only be substantiated with a side-by-side performance test.

What Handicaps Are They for?

“The standard PXG 0311 Gen 6 is a good driver for mid to low handicappers while the PXG 0311 Gen 6 XF offers more inherent forgiveness for high handicappers.”

Both models have the same moveable weight system with which you can affect any shot bias you like. Placing the heavy weights in the back also increases forgiveness significantly in both models. So at the end of the day, there is a lot of cross-over in terms of who each model is best for.

How Do They Compare to the 0311 Gen 5 Models?

“This is where we do the side-by-side testing.”

Just like the PXG 0311 Gen 6 irons that I recently tested, I found that the PXG 0311 Gen 6 drivers represent modest improvements over the Gen 5 drivers in terms of performance. Again, the biggest stand out is with shout dispersion.

Somehow PXG tightened up the dispersion significantly in the PXG 0311 Gen 6 drivers. Throughout my testing of both versions, my largest divergence reading was 11 yards. For the most part, divergence stayed in the 6-9 yard range. Superb.

In terms of ball speed, carry distance and spin rates, the PXG 0311 Gen 6 performed just a bit better than the Gen 5 drivers. Take a look at the following tit-for-tat comparison:

PXG 0311 Gen 6 (Standard)

Average Ball Speed: 157.5 MPH

Average Carry Distance: 264.3 yards

Average Spin Rate: 2200 RPM

PXG 0311 Gen 5 (Standard)

Average Ball Speed: 154.8 MPH

Average Carry Distance: 259.7 yards

Average Spin Rate: 2300 RPM

Overview of the Standard PXG 0311 Gen 6 Driver

“The PXG 0311 Gen 6 standard includes three adjustable weight ports, adjustable hosel and offers lower spin rates than the XF version.”

There is less inherent forgiveness than the XF version because of the head shape. But the adjustable weights can be placed to make up for some of that lost forgiveness. The shot-shaping possibilities are pretty much endless so this is a great option for better players.

Pros:

  • Low spin
  • Lower launch than the XF
  • Varied adjustability

Cons:

  • Harder to square up than the XF

Distance: 98/100

Workability: 98/100

Feel & Sound: 96/100

Forgiveness: 96/100

Value: 97/100

Overall Score: 97/100

Overview of the PXG 0311 Gen 6 XF Driver

“The PXG 0311 Gen 6 XF was made to promote higher forgiveness and launch.”

The PXG 0311 Gen 6 XF comes in 9, 10.5 and 12 degree loft versions compared to 7.5, 9 and 10.5 degrees for the standard driver. With the heavier weights placed in the rear position, the PXG 0311 Gen 6 XF was insanely forgiving and provided decent dispersion all across the face.

Pros:

  • Looks confidence-inspiring at address
  • Easy to launch
  • Versatile weighting

Cons:

  • Higher spin rates than the standard

Distance: 97/100

Workability: 96/100

Feel & Sound: 96/100

Forgiveness: 98/100

Value: 97/100

Overall Score: 96/100

Are They Worth it Overall?

“Two things that are consistent in both Gen 6 driver models are distance and accuracy.”

These are the two major advancements that the Gen 6 series makes over the Gen 5 series. The PXG 0311 Gen 6 drivers are distance machines and it doesn’t take a lot of work to keep them on the fairway. I would say these clubs are absolutely worth the investment for anyone who wants to play longer and straighter.

Other Drivers to Consider in 2023

Taylormade Stealth 2 Driver

“The Taylormade Stealth 2 driver features even more carbon fiber implementation than the original Stealth driver.”

In addition to a carbon fiber face, the Taylormade Stealth 2 driver also has a carbon fiber reinforcement ring to help enhance the stability of the head without adding more weight. The weight savings are allotted to a heavier rear steel weight. Though not quite as long as the PXG 0311 Gen 6 drivers, the Taylormade Stealth 2 drivers offer comparable forgiveness and may even help you get your club head speed up.

Callaway Big Bertha 23 Driver

“The new Big Bertha driver has a sleeker design than its predecessors but still retains confidence-inspiring looks.”

The latest iteration of the Big Bertha driver sees Callaway taking a slightly different approach to stopping a slice. Instead of a purely draw bias weighting system, the mass has been moved up in the head to mute spin. The Callaway BB23 driver is still an excellent choice for players who want to eliminate their big miss; but it can also help with carry distance as well.

Ping G430 Max Driver

“The Ping G430 Max driver features a 25-gram sliding weight in the back of the head.”

This feature alone gives it the versatility to rival the PXG 0311 Gen 6 drivers. Then, you throw in the adjustable hosel and you end up with a forgiving driver that can affect any shot shape under the sun. As always, this Ping driver has a very crisp, metallic sound at impact thanks to the forged titanium face construction. The variable roll radius also helps to keep spin and launch numbers under control on mis-hits.
