Ping G410 vs G425 Irons Review & Specs

Every year golf club manufacturers come out with a new line of clubs that promise better distance, more forgiveness and striking accuracy. Chances are though, you aren’t in the market for a new set of golf clubs every year.

In fact, a lot of players get accustomed to there clubs and are reluctant to learn a new set all over again. So if you feel a bit out of the loop with what’s recent in iron technology, don’t worry, we have you covered. Today we’ll be reviewing 2 sets of Ping irons to keep you up on things.

An Intro to the Ping G Series Of Irons

Ping irons have been a stalwart on the PGA tour for a long time now. Ever since 2004, the G series has been reshaping the way people play on the fairway. Every year they come out with a new G series model with incremental improvements to the last.

The G410 irons represented a stark departure from what was typical of the G series up to that point. With a smaller blade design and little offset, it was designed for serious players. The G425 irons offer even higher MOI from the G410’s so they play very forgiving.

G410 Key Features

The G410’s are predicated on forgiveness and scoring. The shorter blade helps to increase MOI while the generous loft allows for great drop and stop potential on the green.

The free-floating face allows for more flex as well so the G410’s also offer a little something in the way of ball speed.

G425 Key Features

The G425 irons have the same goals in mind as the 410’s: good ball speed coupled with the ability to launch the ball high and drop dead on greens.

To do this Ping has included a tungsten screw in the toe and a weight in the hosel to increase MOI by 3% over the 410 irons.

Who Is Each Set For?

As you can see, there is no difference in loft or length/lie between these two sets. In fact, there is little to separate these two sets except for improvements in design emphasis.

For example, the G425’s were overall a bit more forgiving on lower face shots than the G410’s.

So if you think you may need the extra MOI and like good, solid perimeter weighting, the G425’s would be the better buy for you.

If however you prefer a softer feel the aluminum and elastomer vibration-dampening rear badge of the G410’s would be a good bonus for you.

Composition Comparison

There are a few composition differences between these 2 iron sets. For one, the G425’s feature Ping’s VFT (Variable Face Thickness technology) which, increases flex at more points on the face.

Secondly, the G425’s have an undercut running along the sole and the top rail. Perhaps the starkest composition difference however is that the G425’s have an even shorter blade length than the already compact G410’s.

Performance Comparison

To compare how the G410 and the G425 performed overall we have broken them down in the following categories:

Distance

The distance in the long irons of these two sets was virtually identical.

The 7 iron of the G410 played slightly longer but that was less important on close approaches.

Forgiveness

The G425’s have carried the forgiveness torch even further than the G410’s – but not by much.

They were the more forgiving iron thanks to the VFT technology and the shortened blade.

Again though the forgiveness difference between these 2 iron sets is almost negligible.

Feel

We actually liked the feel of the Ping G410 irons more than the G425’s. The hybrid elastomer/aluminum badge in the cavity coupled with the hydropearl finish of these irons gave them a softer, smoother feel than the G425’s.

Price Comparison

The Ping G410 irons will run you about $750 for a brand new standard set. The G425 irons brand new will cost between $750 and $850.

Final Assessment

As far as cavity back irons go, both the G410’s and the G425’s are in the upper echelon. While neither of them will play as long as your typical distance irons, we like the fact that there is more precision and control in the shorter irons of both these sets.

Clearly, Ping designed these iterations of the G series for mid to low handicappers in mind (all you have to do is look at the blade profile to see that). If you are a fan of the G series, we recommend the G425’s.

They simply have more of what makes the G series appealing to golfers than the 410’s do. They are our choice so check them out soon.
