Ping G15 Vs Ping G20 Driver

“Traditionally, the G series of clubs from Ping has been designed for mid to high handicappers.

But within the G series are a number of drivers that may be viable for you. Which one should you choose?”

That is precisely the question we will be helping you answer in the following comparison review. Even in 2023, the “G” series from Ping is synonymous with forgiveness and accurate performance.

However, one thing that you have to keep in mind is that both the Ping G20 and the Ping G15 drivers are over a decade old.

So in addition to finding out which was the better overall driver, we also wanted to determine whether or not these drivers should even be gamed by anyone in 2023. Let’s begin with an overview of both drivers.

Ping G15 Overview

Ping G15

“Right off the bat, you can see how large this driver is.”

Whether you’re looking at it in the bag or behind the ball, the Ping G15 looks bold and big.

It has an elongated head shape that we have actually seen in some modern game improvement drivers. So kudos to Ping for implementing what is apparently an endearing head design.

This is a 460cc head volume driver with a decent amount of offset. At address, you can feel the confidence well up in you as you line up your shot. The alignment markers are clear and helpful.

The face feels lively at impact. The feedback is clear – you know exactly where you made contact on the face after every swing.

Granted, this isn’t the prettiest driver on the market; but if you’re a high handicappers seeking forgiveness, the Ping G15 shouldn’t be overlooked outright.

Ping G20 Overview

Ping G20

“The profile of the Ping G20 is similar to that of the G15.”

And while the Ping G20 is also a 460cc driver, it doesn’t have the same elongated shape that the G15 does.

What we mean is that the length from the back of the head to the face is not as long as the Ping G15. Still, you get a nice oversized look at point of address with a slightly cleaner looking crown.

The crown has a nice matte black finish and looks very aerodynamic. At impact, you get a clean metallic “crack” that reminds you that you’re playing a Ping driver.

Like the Ping G15, the Ping G20 driver was made for high handicap players. It yields a unique combination of high launch and low spin.

Overview Conclusion

“We will discuss exactly why in subsequent sections, but the Ping G20 was the overall more forgiving driver. t has a cleaner look, it’s not as bulky and offers slightly better accuracy than the Ping G15 driver.”

Of course, the Ping G20 is only better if you want more forgiveness and better looks. But in the end, who wouldn’t opt for those upgrades if given the choice?

It definitely bears mentioning that the distances we were getting from both drivers were similar: both drivers stayed in the 255 – 265 yard range.

Ping G15 Key Features

Ping G15.1

“The feature that defines most of the performance of this driver is the sizable external sole weight pad.”

But it’s the positioning of this weight that makes its effect so far-reaching. Yes, it brings the CG down so it’s easy to get under the ball and launch it high; but it also sits in the middle of the body.

This helps to reduce some spin which in turn, leads to longer carries.

As we have already mentioned, the G15 yields about as much distance as the Ping G20.

The head of the Ping G15 is longer though. This puts more space between that weight and the face so you get a better distribution of swing energy – even if you miss the center of the face.

Ping G20 Key Features

Ping G20.1

“On this side, the feature that defines most of the performance of the Ping G20 is variable face thickness.”

This is what makes the Ping G20 more forgiving than the G15. Variable face thickness increases MOI on mis-hits.

So shots made high/low or near the heel/toe don’t undergo as much twisting and warping. In other words, the face stays stable in almost all sectors. Likewise, the head stays stable thanks to an 8-1-1 titanium body construction.

Who Should Buy the Ping G20 Driver?

Ping G20.2

“The Ping G20 driver would be a good fit for handicappers in the 16 – 22 handicap range.”

We say this because there is at least a semblance of workability in the Ping G20 driver. The more compact shaping will appeal to slightly more experienced golfers (compared to beginners).

The Ping G20 driver will help you stay on the fairway more effectively than the G15 as well.

So in the end, the Ping G15 still has something to offer beginners in 2023. Likewise, the Ping G20 also merits play by golfers (both mid and high handicappers) today.

Overall though, the Ping G20 is the better driver.
