Nike Ignite Irons Review? Still Good And Forgiving for High Handicappers?

“Nike Golf has made really solid clubs on and off for the past decade or more.”

At least, that’s how far back I remember Nike golf clubs being any good. They’re not all winners but you’d be doing yourself a disservice by dismissing the company altogether – especially if you are looking for a great bargain.

Today we will be taking a look at the Nike Ignite irons. It should be noted that Nike Ignite 2 irons and Nike Ignite 3 irons are separate sets. We will be taking a look at both the Ignite 2’s and Ignite 3’s in the following review. Will either of these irons be good for high handicappers? Read on to find out.

Are Nike Ignite 2 Irons Still Good?

“Compared to the Nike Ignite 3 irons, the Nike Ignite 2’s have a more compact head shape.”

The Nike Ignite 2 irons have a very basic and straightforward cavity back design. But I found these clubs to be something of a mystery because I couldn’t really figure out who they were designed for.

On the one hand, the Nike Ignite 2’s feature a compact head shape: not very long from heel to toe and the face profile is also pretty shallow. On top of that, you get a moderate sole width.

But the Nike Ignite 2 irons still have a deep cavity back which shifts the weight to the perimeter of the head nicely. The Nike Ignite 2 irons also have pronounced offset which is odd to see in irons with such compact heads.

The offset and the deep cavity design are clearly beneficial for high handicappers; but the compact head design sort of nullifies the former features. The Nike Ignite 2 irons aren’t the easiest to hit; but they may still be good for mid handicap players.

Are Nike Ignite 3 Irons Still Good?

“The Nike Ignite 3 irons leave no mysteries.”

They are longer from heel to toe than the Ignite 2 irons and they have advanced perimeter weighting in the form of a couple of weight slots placed in the heel and toe. The Nike Ignite 3’s still have a cavity back design; but the undercut is thicker. This makes them launch higher than the Nike Ignite 2 irons.

The Nike Ignite 3’s also retain the pronounced offset of the Nike Ignite 2 irons. So when you look down at the 3’s you see a very forgiving-looking iron that screams “forgiveness.”

And indeed, the Nike Ignite 3 irons were more forgiving than the Nike Ignite 2’s. While not as workable, the Nike Ignite 3’s are certainly still a great option for high handicappers.

Are Nike Ignite Irons Forgiving for High Handicappers?

“If you are looking for the irons with the most forgiveness, I would strongly recommend the Nike Ignite 3 irons.”

While the Nike Ignite 2 irons make it easy to square up at address and eliminate the right side of the fairway for you, they aren’t as naturally forgiving as the Nike Ignite 3’s. The Nike Ignite 3’s will help you avoid the dreaded slice. And going even further, they will help you stay in the middle of the fairway.

I found the perimeter weighting to be very useful. When I intentionally mis-hit, the heel/toe weighting minimized spin that curves out the ball. The result was tighter dispersion on off-center strikes.

However, the Nike Ignite 2 irons had better overall feel and feedback. Feedback can be helpful for high handicappers – especially during practice. But overall, I would still choose the Nike Ignite 3 irons over the Ignite 2’s if I were a high handicapper seeking forgiveness chiefly.

Nike Ignite Vs Nike Vapor Fly Irons

“The Nike Vapor Fly irons are lightweight and have a profile similar to the Nike Ignite 3’s.”

The large cavity back design and lightweight specs enhance forgiveness and will help you increase your club head speed. The Nike Vapor Fly irons would be a good choice if your chief concern is increasing your swing speed.

Nike Ignite First Impressions

“The Nike Ignite irons cover all the bases.”

I like that the Nike Ignite 2 irons were workable and gave clean feedback on all my shots. I also liked that the Nike Ignite 3 irons were supremely forgiving and produced playable lies with very little effort.

Taken together, the Nike Ignite irons offer the best of both worlds. It’s just up to you to decide which set is the better fit.

Nike Ignite Key Technology

Cavity Back Design

A cavity back design increases forgiveness on mis-hits by moving more weight to the perimeter of the head. This adds stability and stops the head from warping when you miss the sweet spot.

Low Center of Gravity

Both the Nike Ignite 2 and Ignite 3 irons feature a low center of gravity which helps launch the ball up.

Perimeter Weight Ports

The Nike Ignite 3 irons feature weight ports in the heel and toe. This works in concert with the deep cavity back design to offer a high degree of stability on shots made away from the sweet spot.

Who Should Buy the Nike Ignite Irons?

“The Nike Ignite 2 irons would be good for mid handicappers. The Nike Ignite 3 irons are better for high handicappers.”

The Nike Ignite 3 irons stand up to modern game improvement irons very well. While they don’t play super-long, it’s almost impossible not to get a playable lie out of them from the tee or the deck.
