Mizuno T22 Wedges Review – Are They Forgiving & Good for High Handicappers?

The Mizuno T22 wedges come in four different sole grinds: S, D, C and X.

The S grind has the fullest sole. The D grind reduces mass in the sole and allows for a bit  more heel relief through the turf. The C grind has toe relief by placing more weight in the heel. The X grind offers both heel and toe relief and is designed to help players pluck the ball from any lie.

You also get multiple loft options for each grind. With so many options to choose from, it can be very exciting to invest in a Mizuno T22 wedge. But should you spend the money on these wedges if you’re a high handicapper? I tested the Mizuno T22 wedge to see if it was of any worth to high handicap players.

Mizuno T22 Wedges Overview

“In addition to the grind options, you can also get the Mizuno T22 in a raw, denim copper and satin chrome finish.”

Keep in mind that the Mizuno T22 in a raw finish will oxidize and rust over the years. And this is by design. Some players believe that oxidation enhances the feel of a wedge and even makes it easier to control spin – just something to keep in mind. The Mizuno T22 wedges range in loft from 46 to 58 degrees.

For this specific round of testing I picked up the Mizuno T22 in 54 degrees in S grind. S grind will likely be the best option for high handicap players as it gives you a bit more forgiveness through the turf and helps with launch.

The Mizuno T22 wedges are single-piece grain flow forged. Made from boron steel, the Mizuno T22 wedges were made to be durable and keep your spin rates up for many seasons. All finishes save for the raw finish have a copper underlay to soften up the feel even more.

These wedges have a modified teardrop head profile which is slightly on the compact side. The quad cut milled grooves were designed for longevity and acute spin control in the meantime. Overall, these are very impressive wedges on paper. But how did they fare on the course?

Are Mizuno T22 Wedges Forgiving?

“The Mizuno T22 wedges played cleaner through the rough than any wedges I have reviewed over the past couple of years.”

And that’s exactly what you want from your wedge. I felt that I could pick the ball up clean off the turf in any lie. The fuller sole of the S grind feels really smooth even from the cabbage and there is enough heft in it to mow down the tall grass.

It didn’t take me long to be able to make clean contact with the ball from the rough and the sand. The Mizuno T22 in S grind also launches high with minimal effort. The feedback is just a bit muddled so you have to pay specific attention to the feel in order to determine where you made contact.

Other than that though, the Mizuno T22 was indeed forgiving. It’s a very well-balanced wedge that feels good in the hands and on your downswing.

Are the Mizuno T22 Wedges Good for Beginners & High Handicappers?

“It wouldn’t take long for a high handicapper to get the hang of these wedges.”

Beginners might have more difficulty though. The compact shaping may make it hard for pure beginners to strike the ball clean and get the head speed/launch they need from tough lies. But for 18-28 handicappers, this shouldn’t be a problem.

The premium appointments of these wedges make them viable for high and low handicappers alike. After all, what player couldn’t use cleaner turf interaction from their wedges?

Should You Buy the Mizuno T22 Wedge Or the Mizuno S23 Wedge?

“The Mizuno S23 wedges have a slightly higher CG than the Mizuno T22.”

This allows for sharper shot-shaping and spin control. But the Mizuno S23 irons also have a partial cavity in the heel, making them surprisingly forgiving. The S23 wedges are another set that could be playable for high and low handicappers. And if you’re looking for more forgiveness than what the Mizuno T22’s offer, you may want to  check out the Mizuno S23 wedges.

Mizuno T22 First Impressions

“The Mizuno T22 in denim copper is simply stunning.”

Denim copper is essentially a light bronze color that gives these wedges a distinguished look. And although I won’t be able to see it, I think they are going to age really well.

The Mizuno T22 wedges are capable of hitting every shot you need to hit. So whether you’re a high handicapper or low handicapper, you should get along very well with the Mizuno T22 wedges. If you are a high handicapper, I would recommend the Mizuno T22 in S grind.

The Mizuno Wedge Family

It’s amazing what a small cavity can do. The Mizuno S23 wedges feature a small cavity in the heel section which helps to straighten out mis-hits. The CG is also positioned a little higher so it may fly straighter and further for players who frame the ball in the center of the face.
