Leona Maguire was born in Ballyconnell, Cavan, Ireland, on November 30,1994. Her parents are Breda and Declan Maguire. Leona also has a twin sister, Lisa, a retired Professional golfer.
She turned to golf at the age of nine, despite showing potential as a swimmer. Her move would be vindicated by her success as an amateur. In 2005, as a 10-year old, she surged to victory in the HSBC British Wee Wonders Championship. At the time, her handicap was 14, and she shot a net 61.
Two months later, she came second behind her twin sister at the Young Masters Golf Junior Series in Spain. As a 13-year old, Leona claimed the Irish Women’s Amateur Close Championship.
Fast forward three years and Maguire would taste success outside of Ireland and the United Kingdom. First up, she journeyed to Lisbon, where she won the Portuguese Ladies Amateur Open by 15-shots. Later that year, it was on to the Netherlands, where she bagged the European Ladies Amateur Championship at Noordwijkse Golf Club. That wasn’t enough for Leona, as she also lifted the Irish Women’s Open Strokeplay championship.
When she was 17 and still in high school, she was called up to Great Britain and Ireland Curtis Cup team. The Brits and Irish would defeat the United States by one point.
Maguire departed Loreto College in Cavan in 2014 with honors and accepted an offer from Duke University. She joined North Carolina-based University in late 2014 and got her college career off to a flying start.
In her first season at Duke, she won three events and recorded the lowest stroke average in the history of women’s golf at the University. Additionally, she tied the College’s record for most rounds of Par or under in a season.
Outside of her college commitments, Maguire impressed during her European appearances. She won the British Ladies Amateur and earned a guest invite to the ISPS Handa Ladies European Masters. Leona came close and finished in second, one shot off the lead.
