Cougar Golf Clubs Reviewed – Who Makes Them, Are They Any Good?

cougar

Cougar Golf produces a range of different golfing equipment, so let’s see what this golf brand brings to the table.

Story And Selling Points Of Cougar Golf Clubs

Golfing equipment under the Cougar Golf brand has been around since the early 1970s.

The brand today offers a range of different golfing equipment aimed at beginners and casual players, as well as those with higher handicaps who want to buy their first set of decent golfing equipment.

From full golfing sets to individual clubs, bags, and balls, Cougar Golf offers everything a golfer might need before enjoying a round on their local course

History Of Cougar Golf Clubs

Since 1973, Cougar Golf has provided affordable, well-made golfing equipment to golf lovers the world over.

In those early years, the brand was particularly popular in Australia, so much so that finding the clubs wasn’t an easy task as any stock sold out quickly.

Thanks to its popularity Down Under, Cougar Golf started producing golfing equipment in Australia to provide clubs to one of their most popular markets.

Who Makes Cougar Golf Clubs? And Where?

These clubs and other golfing equipment are no longer made in the United States but are still manufactured in Australia.

They can be bought online through various websites, including Amazon.

Good Clubs? Good Brand? What Handicap Range?

Let’s talk about whether you should consider Cougar Golf clubs as a worthy addition to your bag.

There’s no doubt that these clubs are some of the more affordable on the market, but does that come at a cost in other areas?

Overall, if you are brand new to the game of golf or have played for only a few months, you’d look to a brand like Cougar as a step up from borrowed clubs or perhaps a very old hand-me-down set you might be using.

For mid-to-high handicappers who don’t want to spend too much money purchasing golfing equipment, they are certainly worth your consideration.

Quick Facts Table

  • Cougar Golf has manufactured over 100,000 sets of clubs for the Australian market alone
  • Clubs, club sets, and equipment from Cougar Golf can be purchased from various online retailers
  • Golf sets include a full range of clubs
  • Sets and individual clubs can be customised

Cougar X Cat II Golf Club Set Review

cougar xcat

Selling points

  • Full set of clubs
  • Fairway woods and irons feature oversized heads for a large sweet spot
  • Added accessories include golf club covers, a stand bag, and more

This 18-piece ready-to-play set contains every club a golfer might need to give themselves the best chance of shooting lower scores out on the course.

This includes a driver, two graphite fairway woods, eight steel irons, a pitching wedge, a blade-style putter, and a heavy-duty stand bag.

The woods as well as the irons feature oversized heads, while the driver has a 400 cc head as well as a graphite shaft and provides 10.5 degrees of loft off the tee.

Other accessories include a full-sized stand bag, golf club covers, and a rain cover.

Out on the range, we found that these clubs performed as you would expect for a set at their price point.

There’s no doubt that they are aimed at golfers who are looking to buy their first set of golf clubs.

Thanks to its graphite shaft, the driver performed well, was easy to swing, and had a large sweet spot. The same can be said for the fairway woods and the irons.

The choice of a blade-style putter might not be everybody’s cup of tea, but it performed solidly during our testing.

Pros:

  • Everything you need for a round of golf
  • Driver, woods and irons have large sweet spots
  • Affordable

Cons:

  • Irons aren’t the lightest clubs we’ve ever hit with

Overall Score: 80/100

Cougar Tour Cat Pro 17-Piece Men’s Golf Set (Right-Handed) Review

Cougar Tour Cat Pro

Selling points

  • 17-piece golf set
  • Includes hybrid clubs
  • A titanium head driver adds distance off the tee

Another golf set offered by Cougar is the Tour Cat Pro, which comprises 17 pieces in total.

It’s different from the X Cat II as this has a titanium driver, perfect for golfers looking to add a little extra length to their driving game.

The other difference is that the Tour Cat Pro set includes a hybrid as well, which many golfers look for in their bags.

Clubs include a driver, 3 wood, 1 hybrid, 7 irons, a pitching wedge, and a putter.

This set impressed out on the course, with the driver hitting fairly long and the irons, thanks to their perimeter-weighted cavity backs, allowing for added length with high approaches.

The heel-toe face balanced putter also performed admirably on the greens.

Much like the X Cat II, these are aimed at casual golfers, but perhaps those who are looking for a titanium driver and a differently styled putter.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Filament wound graphite shaft and titanium-headed driver for extra driving distance
  • Permiter-weighted cavity-backed irons provide high approaches and add length.
  • Lots of added extras

Cons:

  • Not available for left-handed golfers

Overall Score: 82/100

Cougar Rhythm Iron Set

Selling points

  • All the irons you would ever need
  • Includes pitching and sand wedges

This set includes nine clubs in total, with seven irons (3 to 9) as well as a pitching wedge and a sand wedge.

Out on the course, we found these irons, which feature stainless steel heads and shafts, to be steady performers thanks to their precision balance.

On the whole, they are aimed at high handicap golfers who want a full set of irons as well as more than just a pitching wedge and who already own a driver and woods that meet their requirements.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Solid performers out on the course
  • A full set of irons

Cons:

  • Not easy to find for sale

Overall Score: 80/100

Cougar Power Cat Men’s 17-Piece Package Golf Set Review

Cougar Power Cat Men's 17-Piece Package Golf Set

Selling points

  • A full golf set with all the accessories you need
  • Available for left-handers
  • Woods include speed slot technology

The third full golf set we are covering is the Cat Men’s 17-piece which, much like the other two we’ve already spoken about, includes everything a beginner might need to play a round of golf.

This affordable set does offer something a little different, however. Firstly, it’s available in a range of sizes, depending on your height, and secondly, speed slot technology is included in the two fairway woods, so they will hit further than regular woods.

The set includes an oversized #1 wood, #3 and #5 fairway woods, a multi-purpose 22-degree hybrid club, a second hybrid with a 26-degree loft, perimeter-weighted 6, 7, 8, and 9 irons, a pitching wedge, a sand wedge, and a dual alignment putter.

While there is no driver, we found the #1 wood gives excellent distance, coupled with superb accuracy and forgiveness. The irons feature a modern perimeter-weighted design and also performed well in testing.

The set also includes a golf bag with a rain hood as well as covers for selected clubs.

Much like the other Cougar Golf sets we’ve covered, this is perfect for mid to high handicappers who are looking to incorporate hybrids into their bag.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • A range of different clubs, including hybrids
  • Incorporates modern golfing technology
  • Perfect for high handicappers
  • All the added extras, including covers and golf bag

Cons:

  • No driver

Overall Score: 87/100
