Cobra Amp Cell Irons Review – What Handicap Are They for? Are They Forgiving?

“The Cobra Amp Cell irons came out a decade ago which isn’t an eternity in golf gear years. Still, you don’t hear too much about them these days!”

Is that because they stink? Find out in the following review.

Cobra Amp Cell Irons Overview

“I got my hands on a set of Cobra Amp Cell irons and took them to the range and my local course for a round of testing.”

It’s rare that I am able to do this but I can sum up what the Cobra Amp Cell irons are all about in one word: middle. Almost everything about this iron set is “middle.” The head size is medium, the top line is of medium width, the sole is medium wide and the launch is naturally mid.

Moreover, I think these irons were designed for middle handicappers. We’ll get more into the performance of these irons in a bit. For now though, I want to focus on the looks. I really liked how the high toe area sort of blends seamlessly into the medium-thick topline. They look assuring at address without looking bulky in the least.

The cavity back isn’t glaring. Again, it’s of a medium depth with a medium undercut. When you look down, you don’t see the undercut sticking out so much that it’s distracting.

The Cobra Amp Cell irons have been fitted with the E9 face which is essentially a metal wood face. The idea was to make the sweet spot as big as possible for medium sized irons.

Are the Cobra Amp Cell Irons Forgiving?

“The Cobra Amp Cell irons have a unique sole design.”

The soles have beveled leading and trailing edges. This makes turf interaction really smooth on pretty much any lie. During testing, I found that I was much less prone to digging with these irons – and it should be noted that they are slightly heavier than my gamers.

Still, the sole allows you to get low enough to scoop the ball off the surface even if you’re playing from the cabbage. So right off the bat, they are forgiving for players who find themselves in the weeds a lot.

Once again, I must say that the offset in these irons is…medium. There is certainly enough to notice but not too much that it makes these irons look unplayable to more skilled players.

I’m not sure if it was the combination of the face and the offset or what but I was hitting dead-center shots time after time. My natural flight was incredibly straight at first (maybe 1-2 yards off the line to the left) and then it turned into a very gentle fade before landing back to within a few yards of the line.

Pretty astounding overall and I can’t imagine that it would be hard for any player to achieve the same kind of shot shape.

There is one caveat though. The sweet spot is large and hard to miss; but don’t expect not to be punished if you somehow miss the sweet spot. There is no perimeter weighting here, no variable face thickness or any of that. Cobra put all their forgiveness eggs in the big sweet spot basket. Any strikes outside the sweet spot are subject to wide dispersion and severe ball speed loss.

Are the Cobra Amp Cell Irons Good for Beginners & High Handicappers?

“The Cobra Amp Cell irons are ok for beginners; but I know there are better irons out there for pure golf newbies.”

On the other hand, the Cobra Amp Cell irons are really good for high and mid handicappers. For high handicappers, the Cobra Amp Cell irons offer naturally high launch. So they would be good for inexperienced players who are having trouble getting the ball up in the air.

But I found that the Cobra Amp Cell irons could be flighted down fairly easily – making them viable for mid handicappers as well. But getting back to straight up high handicappers, I think the Cobra Amp Cell’s would work really well.

They offer incredibly tight dispersion on all but the most deviant mis-hits. The distance I was getting was pretty average by my standards (an average of 156.4 yards with the 7-iron) so don’t expect a ton of help there. But more importantly for high handicappers, the Cobra Amp Cell irons are incredibly accurate and ask for minimal striking accuracy in return.

Should you Buy the Cobra Amp Cells or the Cobra Amp Cell Pros

“As the name suggests, the Cobra Amp Cell Pro irons are aimed at skilled players.”

And you can just tell by comparing the way they look to the Cobra Amp Cell irons. The Pro versions have thinner top lines, thinner soles and a muscle back design. I found that there is almost no forgiveness in the Cobra Amp Cell Pro irons. However, it was much easier to shape shots with the mid and short irons of the Cobra Amp Cell Pro set than it was with the standard Cobra Amp Cell irons.

Cobra Amp Cell – First Impressions

“It was almost surreal how straight my ball was staying after impact.”

And it didn’t take much. A couple of my warmup swings were flying straighter than anything I’ve seen from my current gamers. In fact, the widest divergence I saw during my testing was just 8 yards.
