Callaway Mavrik vs Cobra Speedzone Driver Comparison, Specs & Review

The prevailing theory is that if you can swing the driver faster, the ball will go further. Of course, accuracy, slicing, draw and fade will certainly play a role in how far down the fairway the ball ultimately goes, but that’s the general idea.

That’s why so many players look to get their swing speed and club head speed up as much as possible. For that reason, there is a huge variety of drivers that have been designed to do just that. Today, we will look at 2 such drivers that promise better club head speed with aerodynamic design.

 

An Overview Of Both Drivers

 

In addition to better swing speed, both the Callaway Mavrik and the Cobra Speedzone have features that were designed to increase ball speed. They are both more or less suitable for mid to high handicappers in that they provide easier distance even on off-center shots.

Callaway Mavrik Key Features

 

Callaway continues to amaze with their Flash Face technology.

In the case of the Callaway Mavrik driver, this comes in the form of an ultra-thin and resilient stainless steel that flexes at more points on the face.

The Mavrik also sports an aerodynamic head shape they call “Cyclone Aero.”

 

Cobra Speedzone Key Features

 

Cobra’s answer to Flash Face technology is a face that has been milled pretty much to where it meets the crown and sole.

The Speedzone driver produces more flex on low-face shots. The Speedzone driver also features milled perimeter leading edges to cut through the air more fluidly.

 

The Mavrik Family

You can choose between the standard Mavrik, the Mavrik Max and the Mavrik Sub Zero.

The Mavrik Max has the highest launch point while the Sub Zero has the lowest. The Sub Zero also boasts the lowest spin rate. However, the standard Mavrik is the only one with the Cyclone Aero head shape.

 

The Speedzone Family

The Speedzone line of drivers is a bit less crowded. You have the standard Speedzone and the Speedzone Xtreme. The main differences between the two is that the Xtreme sports an oversized head profile and does not have an adjustable weight. The standard Speedzone also promotes lower spin.

 

The Callaway Mavrik Vs. The Callaway Epic Speed 21

 

While both of these Callaway drivers feature the Jailbreak bars in the head that promote shot stability, the Epic Speed offers more forgiveness in a lighter driver. The triaxial carbon crown of the Epic Speed helps to keep overall weight down but allows for discretionary weight to be placed behind the sweet spot.

 

The Cobra Speedzone Vs. The Cobra RadSpeed

Again, the RadSpeed and the Speedzone boast the same face flexing technology: they both have the infinity milled face architecture. The RadSpeed however, puts a higher emphasis on low spin by placing a maximum amount of distance between the 28g front weight and the 10 gram rear weight.

The differences between these two drivers are negligible. Plain and simple.

Really, it comes down to how much you’ll want to spend. The Speedzone will surely appeal to the more frugal player.

 

Performance Comparison

Both of these drivers provided comparable distance but the Speedzone felt a little better overall.

It has a nice, low, thudding tone when you get the sweet spot while the Mavrik sounds a bit too hollow. The Speedzone was also producing less spin by and large which, tended to equate to more distance.

 

Price Comparison

You’re looking at a $100 difference in price between these drivers.

The Callaway Mavrik is the more expensive at $400 while you can pick up a brand new Cobra Speedzone driver for just about $300.

 

Callaway Mavrik Pros & Cons

Pros:

• The face flexes well at pretty much every point
• Jailbreak bars provide stability for the thin face
• It does a good job of cutting through the air on your down swing
• Feels comfortable
• Provides slight draw bias
• Features an oversized head congenial for beginners and intermediate players

• Produces more spin than the Cobra Speedzone driver
• There’s no adjustable weight
• It has a lower launch angle
• Fewer shaft options

Cobra Speedzone Pros & Cons

Pros:

• Produces a low amount of spin on the tee
• Produces a deeper, more satisfying sound
• Flexes well across the entire face
• Includes an adjustable weight
• There are more shaft options
• It’s more affordable than the Callaway Mavrik driver

 

Cons:

• It doesn’t have an adjustable hosel
• Carry distance is a bit lackluster
• Better for mid to low handicappers
• Played slightly shorter than the Callaway Mavrik Driver

Final Assessment

At the top of this review, we mentioned that both of these drivers are marketed to help improve swing and ball speed. So which one delivered on that front? It was almost a dead tie. We were getting almost identical club head speeds with both of these drivers.

The slight winner though was the Callaway Mavrik which, produced marginally faster club head speed and increased distance of about 1-2 yards. In the end though, we hand our endorsement to the Cobra Speedzone.
