The Callaway Epic Max and Mavrik Max fairway woods have a lot of features in common because essentially, the Epic Max was the successor to the Mavrik Max.

With the Mavrik Max, Callaway introduced some pretty innovative concepts to the world of fairway woods. They sought to add more versatility to clubs in player’s bags that were more or less static.

The Epic Max fairway woods continued that tradition but with updated design materials and concepts. But is the Callaway Epic Max really better than the Mavrik Max? Is the Mavrik Max still worth playing in 2022? Let’s find out.

Since the Callaway Mavrik Max and the Epic Max are so similar, we can provide and overview of both clubs in the same section.

The designation “Max” is important for both of these fairway woods because “Max” signifies that they are the largest clubs in their respective lines. Both of these fairway woods were designed to provide “Max” forgiveness with oversized heads.

One of the more interesting design aspects of both of these fairway woods however is the shallow faces that give them an almost hybrid look and feel. After testing both of these fairway woods, we know for certain that they are both indeed forgiving if nothing else.

Callaway Mavrik Max Fairway Wood Key Features

You would think that with a head this big, the Callaway Mavrik Max would be an overly heavy fairway wood.

However, even the 3 wood in this set felt light and wieldy thanks in part to a full carbon crown. Carbon is an incredibly strong yet light material so it provides a lot of weight savings for the two adjustable weights.

There is a 2g and 14g weight that you can switch out depending on what kind of bias you want for your swing. The smaller front weight can also be adjusted to lower spin rates. This was a fun but time-consuming feature as it takes some time to dial in the weights the way you want.

Perhaps the most impressive feature that both of these fairway woods share is a forged face with a shallower profile than most fairway woods.

Callaway Epic Max Fairway Wood Key Features

he Callaway Epic Max Fairway woods kick things up a notch by using C300 maraging steel in the face.

Once again, we are dealing with a forged face in the Callaway Epic Max fairway woods. Maraging steel is machined to be incredibly thin so you get tons of flex with the Epic Max woods.

They sport the same oversized head, squat face profile and adjustable 2g and 14g weights as the Callaway Mavrik Max fairway woods. Teh Jailbreak bracing bars have also been redesigned.

With more horizontal stiffness, the newly designed bars are able to support the thinner maraging steel face without making contact.

The Callaway Mavrik Max Family of Woods

The standard Mavrik and the Mavrik Sub Zero also debuted with the Callaway Mavrik Max.

All 3 models feature a carbon crown, jailbreak bars and SS20 faces. However the Sub Zero is aptly named because it has the lowest natural launch angle of the bunch. It also has a midsized head while the standard Mavrik sits between the Max and Sub Zero in terms of head size.

The Callaway Epic Max Family of Woods

If you don’t need interchangeable weights and prefer a slight draw bias, the Callaway Epic Speed fairway wood may be more to your liking.

It has the same forged C300 maraging steel face but with a deeper, more traditional face depth. The head size is also considerably smaller than the Epic Max.

Callaway Mavrik Max Vs Callaway Rogue Fairway Woods

The Callaway Rogue fairway woods feature split weighting in the front and the back.

This is a very interesting feature if you’re interested in distance because it effectively neutralizes spin for a more penetrating ball flight. The Rogue woods even feel a bit better than the Callaway Mavrik Max woods thanks to the 455 Carpenter steel faces.

The Rogue fairway woods are pretty much equal in terms of distance as the Callaway Mavrik Max woods but the Mavrik’s are more forgiving. However, Rogue woods do have a more premium feel.

Callaway Epic Max Vs Callaway Big Bertha Fairway Woods

The head size of the Callaway Big Bertha fairway wood is comparable to the Epic Max wood.

Both of these woods were incredibly forgiving but the Big Bertha’s have more offset which may help if you are having trouble with slices. However, the Epic Max has a nicer feeling face and was more workable overall.

Who is Each Club for?

Both the Callaway Mavrik Max and the Epic Max fairway woods would be great for beginners who are struggling off the deck.

Better players will actually be able to use the 3 wood from both of these sets off the tee. But really, they were designed for players who struggle off the deck.

The refined leading edge of the Callaway Mavrik Max actually makes it a bit more congenial for players struggling to get the launch they need off the deck.

Performance Comparison

The refined jailbreak bars and higher quality face material made the Epic Max woods longer.

By about 5 yards on average, truth be told. Not much we know, but they also felt better.  The Epic Max’s were a bit heavier than the Callaway Mavrik Max’s and both of these woods offered almost identical apex heights.

Accuracy & Consistency Comparison

Once again, the Epic Max’s stole the show in terms of consistency.

Almost anywhere on the face you made contact with the Epic Max’s produced good ball speeds. In terms of workability, there was no distinguishing these 2 wood sets. The shot dispersion was also tighter with the Epic Max wood set.

Final Assessment

While the Callaway Mavrik Max is certainly still worth playing these days, the Epic Max offers more help to high/mid handicappers.

Overall the Epic Max was the more forgiving fairway wood by preserving ball speed on areas of the face where beginners usually miss.

It may be a bit uncomfortable at first because of the added weight; but the Callaway Epic Max fairway woods make significant improvements over the older Callaway Mavrik Max woods.
