Are Callaway Diablo Edge Irons Still Good? Are They Forgiving for High Handicappers?

“The Callaway Diablo Edge irons came out in 2010 and have since been discontinued.”

A lot of consumers hear the word “discontinued” when referring to a product and automatically jump to the conclusion that it wasn’t any good. “Discontinued” has a sort of negative connotation attached to it that seems hard to shake.

But the fact is that some of our favorite irons have been discontinued for no other reason than they have been succeeded by something better – the Callaway Mavrik irons come to mind.

Indeed, you cannot buy a new set of Callaway Diablo Edge irons anymore. But were they discontinued because they stunk? Or were they simply replaced with something better? Read on to find out.

Are the Callaway Diablo Edge Irons Still Good?

“As far as game improvement irons go, the Callaway Diablo Edge irons are still a work of art.”

I wasn’t expecting much out of these irons because frankly, I didn’t know much about them. I never played them before and don’t know anyone who has. But I was simply floored with these irons and can’t for the life of me figure why they discontinued them.

The Callaway Diablo Edge irons are absolutely still good irons because they do a little and a lot of everything. Let’s start with “a little” first. The pronounced offset in the long irons makes it a bit hard to work the ball. But I was able to affect beautiful cuts and sweeping draws with the mid irons in this set with almost no issue. So there is a little workability in these irons.

Now onto what the Callaway Diablo Edge irons have “a lot” of. They have a tremendous amount of forgiveness and launch. Traditionally, you want straight, high flight out of your GI irons and that’s exactly what you get with these irons.

Whether I was hitting low or high on the face didn’t seem to matter – it didn’t significantly impact my distance. Toe-side misses were hardly punished as well. With the 7-iron, I averaged 176.2 yards after my test session was over – a full club’s worth of distance improvement for me.

Are the Callaway Diablo Edge Irons Forgiving for High Handicappers?

“No doubt about it.”

The only shots that seemed to lose trajectory and ball speed were extreme heel misses – nearly hosel rockets. Other than that, the Callaway Diablo Edge irons want to fly high and straight which is a great combination for high handicappers with moderate swing speeds.

I was particularly impressed on the heavy shots I hit. Although they didn’t sound as clean as face-center strikes or even thin shots, they didn’t lose much ball speed or distance – making nearly the entire face viable.

Callaway Diablo Edge Vs Ping G15 Irons

“The Ping G15 irons came out just a year after the Callaway Diablo Edge irons.”

Both sets feature a cavity back design, wide soles and low CG’s. And the similarities are understandable considering that they came out in the same era. Even their loft profile is similar.

Overall though, I was getting better distance with the Callaway Diablo Edge irons. The G15’s produced a weaker trajectory so my carry distance wasn’t as strong. Plus, the G15 irons were more punishing on thin shots.

Callaway Diablo Edge First Impressions

“At first I was put off with the chunky sole and the top line to match.”

But the more I looked at these irons the more I liked them. I really like the crimson red appointments in the cavity and on the back of the heel. The lightly brushed finish also limits reflection without dulling the looks of these irons.

Callaway Diablo Edge Key Technology

“On paper, the technology that went into these irons is very basic.”

Cavity Back Design

The moderate cavity depth allows for high MOI without taking away too much workability in the mid irons.

Low CG Placement

A basic and common feature by today’s standards, the low CG promotes higher launch and enhanced forgiveness on low-face mis-hits.

Solid Impact Sole

The sole is designed to cut through the turf as well as stabilize both thick and thin shots.

Who Should Buy the Callaway Diablo Edge Irons?

“The Callaway Diablo Edge irons are an absolute bargain for both mid and high handicappers.”

I would even go as far as to say that they would be good for beginners. There is definitely enough forgiveness in these irons to make them viable for beginners and high handicappers. Mid handicapper could also take great advantage of the superb distance and moderate workability. The Callaway Diablo Edge irons send the ball high, far and straight with minimal effort so it’s really only single-digit handicappers who likely couldn’t benefit from them.
