It’s hard to imagine you can score a set of PXG irons for under $700 because this is a company known for premium features. But the PXG 0211 DC irons can be had for an excellent price these days. They feature a soft polymer core that helps enhance ball speed.

The top rail is also angled away from the face the closer to the to it stretches which saves on weight. When we tested these irons, we were pleasantly surprised at how light and wieldy they were. They would be a great choice for anyone looking to increase their swing speed.

While the 0211 DC irons lack some of the premium appointments that many other PXG irons have, they still yield very impressive distance and have classic PXG styling. They look great and they will help you get down the fairway for sure.

#2 – Taylormade SIM Max Irons – Best Premium

We have talked about the SIM Max irons quite a bot in the past because even now in 2022, they remain a standard for forgiveness and distance. Simply put: the SIM Max irons would be a great choice for any beginner or high handicapper.

These irons have a large footprint to inspire confidence at point of address and are packed with coveted features designed to increase ball speed and forgiveness. For example, the Inverted Cone Technology (ICT) stretches the part of the face that flexes close to the toe.

Leftward misses should not be a problem with these irons. Then there is the Speed Pocket which allows more flex near the bottom of the face where many players mis-hit.

This is another great set of lightweight irons that would be a good choice for seniors or anyone looking to increase their swing speed. The entire topl line has been replaced with carbon fiber – a material that has a very favorable strength to weight ratio.

The Speedzone irons also have a forged face that helps to promote consistency improve feel at impact. We really liked these clubs because they are very easy to just pick up and play. They have relatively shallow cavity backs so they look clean at address.

The only thing we took a bit of issue with was the relatively low launch. For this reason, we wouldn’t recommend them to anyone who is having trouble getting the ball airborne.

The Callaway Mavrik Max irons are a great choice for beginners and high handicappers because they have a large footprint and sole width that new players will feel very comfortable with. These are cavity back irons and you can see the undercut jut out at point of address.

We liked that the tungsten weights help improve launch and lower the CG a great deal. Overall, these irons will feel comfortable in the hands of neophyte players, even if the longer irons can feel a bit heavy.

#5 on our list is a very unique set in that it is essentially a set of hybrid irons. The Wilson Staff Launch Pad Golf Iron Set is a particularly forgiving set of irons that would be perfect for high handicappers or anyone simply struggling to get the distance they need from their current irons.

The Wilson Staff Launch Pad Golf Irons have a rounded out back similar to a fairway wood and a special lightweight sole that is supposed to help you float just above the turf. The best feature by far though is the hollow body design.

Hollow body irons play very fast because more weight is moved away from the face, allowing it to hinge. This promotes fast ball speeds and in most cases, equals greater distance.

Cleveland pleasantly surprised us with these irons. You may not have considered Cleveland for your next set of irons but you might be missing out if you overlook the Cleveland Launcher UHX Iron Set. The long irons have a hollow body design, promoting ball speed and increasing distance.

But the short irons have a cavity back design which allows for more feel and spin control close to the pin where you really need it. This is a very thoughtfully designed set of irons that really performs above it’s price point.

The short irons were really handy on par 3’s where we really needed to check distance and dial in the spin. The laser-milled grooves feel nice and offer very good control for irons in this price range.

What struck us the most about the Speedback irons was the incredibly low CG. A band of steel wraps behind the back of the sole of these irons, pulling your stroke down to achieve excellent launch and to help stabilize the head on full swings.

Surprisingly, we found that these irons are a really good fit for players with fast swing speeds. Anyone with an average swing speed of 90MPH and above will be able to unlock amazing distance and love the stable feel of these irons.

The Speedback irons also have progressive hosel lengths that get taller as you move down the set. In the short irons, we really liked how the taller hosels raised the CG for better spin control around the green.

That’s not to say that these irons don’t play long and launch high – they do. The deep undercut cavity places more weight low on the head so you can make your ball come down with snow. It’s very easy to get the launch you need from these irons and the perimeter weighting will help keep your shot straight.
