Are Cobra Ufi Irons Still Good? Are They Forgiving for High Handicappers?

Cobra Ufi Irons

“The UFi in the title of these irons stands for Ultimate Forgiveness irons. Naturally, I was expecting a lot of forgiveness from this set.”

The Cobra Ufi irons debuted in 2007 and were easily one of the most technically advanced sets of Cobra irons up to that point.

Still, they are over 15 years old at this point. So how good can they really be when compared to more modern game improvement irons?

This is what I wanted to figure out so I got my hands on a used set of Cobra Ufi irons in good condition and took to the range and course for a round of testing.

Are the Cobra Ufi irons still good for high handicappers today? Read on to find out.

Are the Cobra Ufi Irons Still Good?

“The Cobra Ufi irons have a progressive shaping that I really liked.”

The long irons have a shallower face depth while the short irons have a deeper, more traditional face depth.

I know what you’re thinking “how is a shorter face better for unwieldy long irons?” It’s not just about a shallow face depth – it’s about what was done with the shaved off mass.

The long irons not only look great at address but they are forgiving because lateral forgiveness has been prioritized over up and down forgiveness.

The shallow faces in the long irons allow more mass to be placed in the perimeter of the club head, increasing forgiveness near the heel and toe.

The shorter irons have a deeper club face so you get better up and down workability.

The Cobra Ufi irons also feature a polymer top line insert that helps keep the overall weight of the club head down.

The Cobra Ufi irons were also the first to feature the Metal Matrix face insert which is essentially a metal insert that is lighter than both titanium and steel.

All of these weight savings have been moved low in the club head for easier launch and more forgiveness.

Even as a lighter iron, I found the faces of the Cobra Ufi set to be quite stable. This is probably due to the tungsten weight ports in the heel and toe.

But in any case, the Cobra Ufi irons flew straight for me. They are also decently long.

The high launch hindered my carry a bit; but I was still able to get 158.8 yards out of the 7-iron.

Are the Cobra Ufi’s Forgiving for High Handicappers?

“The Cobra Ufi irons were released during a time when Cobra was really hitting its stride as a GI club manufacturer.”

The Cobra Ufi irons are a good example of that shining GI era. Let’s start with the progressive offset.

In the long irons, I picked up on noticeable offset which will certainly be a welcome sight for high handicappers. But the offset closes up in the short irons allowing for better short game control.

I love progressive offset irons as they add performance dynamism whether you’re a high or mid handicapper.

Then there are the tungsten weight ports in the heel and toe that keep the club head from twisting on off-center strikes.

The combination of the shallow face design and tungsten ports made the long irons very forgiving.

I did have some issues thinning the ball; but that may have been a shaft issue.

For the most part, I was able to use the entire left-to-right span of the face and keep my dispersion within 10 yards.

I also found that it was very easy to control launch in the short irons.

Cobra Ufi Vs Cobra Aerojet Irons

“The Aerojet irons are modern, fast and forgiving.”

But overall, I would say that they aren’t a huge improvement over the Cobra Ufi irons.

The Aerojet irons do feel faster and may be a better help getting your swing speed up. But in terms of forgiveness, the Cobra Ufi irons and the Cobra Aerojets are pretty much the same.

If you want a faster set of irons, by all means, pick up the Cobra Aerojets.

But at a much cheaper price, you can get an older set (the Cobra Ufi) that is just as forgiving.

Cobra Ufi First Impressions

Cobra Ufi Irons1

“The first thing I noticed was the top line.”

The Cobra Ufi irons have a completely black polymer top line. And while it does call a bit of attention at first, it eventually becomes an alignment aid.

I found that the black length of the top line allowed me to frame the ball clearly at address.

Cobra Ufi Key Technology

“At the time, the Cobra Ufi irons were the most technologically advanced irons the company had ever made.”

Metal Matrix Face Insert: An ultra-strong and ultra-light material was used for the face to promote hot ball flight and reduce club head weight.

Progressive Offset: This makes it easier to square up at impact in the long irons and gives more control over knockdown shots in the scoring irons.

Polymer Top Line: This helps move weight down in the sole and serves as a nice alignment marker.

Who Should Buy the Cobra Ufi Irons?

Cobra Ufi Irons2

“Yes, the Cobra Ufi irons would be good for high handicappers; but they could also work for mid handicappers.”

For high handicappers, the dispersion is naturally tight and the launch is effortlessly high.

The only thing that I would be wary about for high handicap/moderate swing speed players is distance.

These aren’t the longest irons on the market. But they are certainly as forgiving as modern GI irons.
