#1 – TaylorMade Noodle Long & Soft Golf Balls – Best Overall

Construction: 2 pieces

Material: Surlyn

Selling Points:

  • 342 dimples
  • Ultra-low compression
  • Impact propulsion core

The TaylorMade Noodle Long & Soft Golf Balls are a great place to start with Taylormade golf balls. These balls have a ridiculously low compression rating of just 34! This makes them incredibly soft and springy.

The best thing about these balls is the distance you get off the tee. While they can be a bit hard to work in thicker grass conditions, off the tee they fly effortlessly far. You won’t need a fast swing speed to get long drives with these balls.

Because they are so soft and long, we would recommend them to new players or anyone with a slower swing speed. And while the main event here is the distance, they provide good spin around the green as well.

Pros:

  • They feel good against putters too
  • Explosive distance
  • Good carry distance

Cons:

  • Cover feels a bit thin
  • They could have benefited from a urethane cover

Overall Rating: 98/100

#2 – TaylorMade TP5x Golf Balls – Best Premium

Construction: 5 pieces

Material: Cast urethane

Selling Points:

  • Increasingly stiff layers
  • Tour Flight dimple pattern
  • HFM Speeed layer

It doesn’t get much better in terms of feel than the TaylorMade TP5x Golf Balls. We’re suckers for urethane covers and when you construct them with a casting process it makes it all the better. The TaylorMade TP5x Golf Balls have a soft feel against the driver, irons, woods and even the putter.

But there is a firm layer just below the cover that helps optimize spin and control. These balls hold their lines very well even when you launch them high. You get great energy transfer from your driver thanks to the impressive 5-layer design.

The soft core gives way to increasingly stiff layers which makes for good greenside control and distance on full swings. For anyone that prioritizes great feel from their golf balls, the TaylorMade TP5x Golf Balls would be a great choice.

Pros:

  • Great feel
  • Good spin with short irons
  • Stable trajectory

Cons:

  • A bit bouncy
  • Not great for fast swing speeds

Overall Rating: 98/100

Our higher handicap testers were averaging drives distances between 189 and 199 with these balls. It is also very easy to flight these balls. They lend themselves well to high-arcing shots and yield higher than usual carry distance.

#4 – TaylorMade Soft Response Golf Ball – Best for Slower Swing Speeds and Seniors

Construction: 3 pieces

Material: Ionomer

Selling Points:

  • Ultra-low compression
  • ZnO Flex core
  • Speed Mantle

If Taylormade says one of their balls is soft, you better believe it will be soft. The TaylorMade Soft Response Golf Balls have a compression rating of 35 and they are the epitome of the movement towards soft, fast balls in golf.

They feature shallow U-shaped dimples which helps cut down on wind resistance and promotes high arcing shots and lots of carry. The ionomer cover is soft and great for seniors or players with a smooth swing tempo and slower swing speed.

This would also be a great ball choice for players who are struggling getting the ball up in the air. We were impressed with the long game spin rates of these balls as well – they were nice and low. While this presented something of a problem with our irons, the low spin will be more than welcome by higher handicap players.

Pros:

  • Great price
  • Low long-game spin
  • Great lift off the deck and tee

Cons:

  • Limited short-game spin
  • Not very consistent in dewy conditions

Overall Rating: 95/100

#5 – Taylormade TP5 Golf Ball – Best for Fast Swing Speeds

Construction: 5 pieces

Material: Urethane

Selling Points:

  • Tour Flight dimple pattern
  • HFM Speed layer
  • Large core

To get the most from your swing, you need good energy transfer from your shaft to the club head and to your ball. This is why the Taylormade TP5 Golf Balls are great for players with fast swing speeds. The 5-layer design transfers energy very well so most of the power from your swing is preserved.

Plus, these balls have a urethane cover which provides the best feel, response and control in our humble opinion. Greenside spin control is also amazing with these balls. If you’re playing inside 100 yards then you will be able to stop the ball dead even on fast greens.

These balls allow for acute spin control with the shorter irons and wedges. The firmer layer just under the cover material (like in the TP5x balls) provides more control than a standard soft ball so these are great all-around performance balls.

Pros:

  • Good carry distance
  • Good short-game control
  • Excellent feel

Cons;

  • A bit pricey
  • Not the best for slow swing speed

Overall Rating: 97/100

#6 – TaylorMade Distance+ Golf Balls – Best for Distance

Construction: 2 pieces

Material: Ionomer

Selling Points:

  • 342 dimple pattern
  • React Speed core
  • Alignment aid

The TaylorMade Distance+ Golf Balls offers an interesting combination of distance and spin control with the wedges. The compression rating is 77 so they have a generally soft feel. The compression rating also sort of explains the enhanced control with the wedges.

77 is soft; but not too soft. In fact, we would recommend a ball in this compression range to a wide array of players spanning different handicaps. The TaylorMade Distance+ Golf Balls play hot off the face of woods whether your teeing off or hitting your second shot on the fairway.

They come in white or yellow and are a steal at just $20 for a dozen (at most retailers). This would be a great choice for anyone looking to maximize driver and wood distance without compromising short-game spin control.

Pros:

  • Comes in 2 colors
  • Great price
  • Long carry distance

Cons:

  • A bit inert off the irons
  • They wear out easily

Overall Rating: 92/100

#7 – TaylorMade RBZ Soft – Best for Beginners & High Handicappers

Construction: 2 pieces

Material: Ionomer

Selling Points:

  • React core
  • 60 compression
  • Comes in white or high-visibility yellow

If you are struggling a bit with distance off the tee then the TaylorMade RBZ Soft would be a great choice. They have a compression rating of 60 so they feel nice and soft off the driver face. While the spin rates were relatively high, they still went far thanks to the expanded core which saves more energy.

Our higher handicap testers were seeing drive distance increases between 7 and 11 yards. From our testing, we have to conclude that these balls would provide an instant increase in distance for most high handicap players.

Pros:

  • Affordable
  • Soft feel
  • Great for slower swing speeds too

Cons:

  • Durability is an issue
  • Somewhat low launch

Overall Rating: 91/100

#8 – Taylormade Tour Response Golf Balls – Best for Low Handicappers

Construction: 3 pieces

Material: Cast urethane

Selling Points:

  • Tour caliber balls
  • Speed Mantle
  • 40 compression

The Taylormade Tour Response Golf Balls bring the softness and forgiveness of the Soft Response balls to a tour-caliber ball. The Taylormade Tour Response Golf Balls have an upgraded cover material and upgraded construction with 3 layers.

Energy transfer in these balls is much better than the Soft Response balls and the cast urethane covers provides a soft feel without losing bite off the iron face. Wedge spin could be a bit higher but that’s the only knock on an otherwise stellar ball.

Pros:

  • They play long
  • Soft feel
  • Good distance

Cons:

  • Limited wedge spin
  • They don’t hold their line very well

Overall Rating: 96/100

#9 – TaylorMade V3 Speed Golf Ball

Construction: 3 pieces

Material: Ionomer

Selling Points:

  • Speedmantle design
  • React core
  • 70 compression

This is a great all-around ball that we would recommend to low to mid handicappers. While ball flight is a bit lacking in this ball, it provides great spin control with the irons and players with swing speeds of 80MPH and above will easily be able to get good distance from it.

The SpeedMantle design helps to preserve more energy from your swing and consistent spin with your mid and short irons. In our experience, the TaylorMade V3 Speed Golf Ball performed very well on approaches inside 100 yards. The low ball flight makes them easier to work from that distance.

Pros:

  • Great for mid to low handicappers
  • Great on short approaches
  • Soft feel into the green

Cons:

  • Roll control is a bit of an issue
  • A bit harder than expected

Overall Rating: 94/100

#10 – TaylorMade Women’s Kalea Golf Balls – Best for Ladies

Construction: 2 pieces

Material: Ionomer

Selling Points:

  • React core
  • 60 compression
  • Matte option available

We end our list with a little something for the ladies. The TaylorMade Women’s Kalea Golf Balls have a low compression rating so they feel soft with pretty much every club in your bag. While there is a matte finish option, we wouldn’t recommend it as it makes these balls inconsistent in wet conditions.

These are also great balls for players with a smooth swing tempo. Some of our more aggressive swingers were having a bit of trouble with consistent flight trajectory; but that wasn’t a problem at all for our testers with a smoother swing style.

And for the price you can’t really go wrong. At most retailers you can expect to pay just $20 for a dozen.

Pros:

  • Good price
  • 3 color options
  • Great for smooth swing styles

Cons:

  • Inconsistent in wet conditions
  • They scuff easily

Overall Rating: 93/100
