True Temper AMT Red Shaft Review – Specs, Flex, Weight

True Temper AMT Red Shaft

The AMT series of shafts from True Temper have garnered a lot of praise – in particular, the Black and White versions.

But you don’t hear too much about the True Temper AMT Red. Why is that?

While we don’t have the answer, we suspect that it’s because the True Temper AMT Red is the runt of the family that was designed for higher handicap players.

However, the True Temper AMT Red features the same Ascending Mass Technology that the White and Black versions have.

We wanted to give the True Temper AMT Red its day in the sun and figure out what its strengths and weaknesses are. So we tested it and documented our findings in the following review.

True Temper AMT Red Shaft Overview

As we have mentioned, AMT stands for Ascending Mass Technology.

This refers to an increase in weight in 3 gram increments. But contrary to popular belief, this incremental increase in mass doesn’t start until the 8-iron. Irons 4-7 have constant weighting.

The idea behind this design is that a constant weight would help with swing consistency in the long and mid irons.

Gradually increasing weight in the scoring irons would help with club head control and precise CG placement.

It sounds a little convoluted but it was actually a nice little touch. In our testing session, we could feel the slight weight increase in the short irons.

This helped stabilize shots – especially mis-hits – and gave us a keener semblance of control – whether it was true or not.

Even if it was just the illusion of enhanced control, it at least worked to increase our confidence. The weight profiles are different depending on which flex you choose.

We’ll get into that a bit more later but for now, know that the True Temper AMT Red shafts are generally lightweight steel shafts.

And in classic True Temper fashion, the AMT Reds have a very smooth load/release. In fact, these are some of the smoothest and best-feeling sub-110 gram shafts we have ever tested.

Why is the True Temper AMT Red So Popular?

True Temper AMT Red Shaft1

Once you swing a True Temper AMT Red shaft, you will see why the entire line is so popular.

Like the other entries into the AMT line, the AMT Red feels exceptionally smooth. In our opinion though, the Red doesn’t really get its fair due. It is overshadowed by the White and Black AMT’s.

But we can see how the True Temper AMT Red could become a massively popular shaft among slow to moderate swing speed players: it invites you to swing outside yourself and rewards you for doing so with a silky transition.

How Does the True Temper AMT Red Perform?

Does the True Temper AMT Red launch high? Yes.

Does the True Temper AMT Red produce mid-high spin rates? Yes. But pretty much anyone could guess that based on the weight profile of this shaft.

What you won’t hear unless you have actually tried these shafts is that they are remarkably stable.

When you stand on this shaft you do certainly feel a kick near the tip section; but it recovers so well that it’s not hard to square the head on these kinds of shots.

That’s why it invites you to take a 110% swing every time – once you do so once, you will know that you can do it consistently.

Dispersion was really tight but our better testers were able to nail an advantageous fade when they needed to.

The 6-iron with the True Temper AMT Red plugged into it produced an average of 161.1 yards for our testers. Most of that came from improved smash factor and smaller divergence figures.

But the True Temper AMT Red shafts really shine around the green. The spin rates come in clutch on short approaches and the controlled flex and extra weighting make for incredibly stable trajectory.

Who Should Buy it?

We’ve spent much of this review praising the True Temper AMT Red.

But don’t be fooled: this is not a shaft for 95+ MPH swingers. Instead, it  is an excellent shaft for virtually anyone swinging below 95 MPH.

As far as lightweight steel shafts go, this is about the smoothest and most accurate you can get.
