M Grind Vs S Grind Vs F Grind Vs K Grind Vs D Grind Vs L Grind – Titleist Vokey Wedge Grind Review

Bob Vokey is the mastermind behind the Vokey wedges, it is the most popular wedge currently on the PGA Tour. In 1997 at the St. Jude Classic Bob Vokey convinced Andy Bean to try his wedges, Andy almost holed his first two chips and insisted he kept them for the tournament, from there the Vokey wedge took off and they have never looked back since.

Vokey believes that not every wedge should be the same, it should be designed to how you deliver the club into the turf, as well as designed for the turf conditions you are playing.

Vokey has designed 6 different grinds to help with all types of turf conditions, angle of attacks, and spin and flight preferences.

Now this can easily become confusing, so we have done our research and testing to deliver an easy guide to these incredible wedges.

Overview

Playing the right grind on your wedges can shave off a number of shots on your round, there is a reason why PGA Tour players are so specific about their wedges.

Understanding the way you deliver the club into the ball and having the correct wedges could be more important than a driver fitting.

What Exactly Is Wedge Grind

The sole of the wedge is changed and material is removed to help improve turf interaction. This in turn will help with more consistency around the greens, giving you more control over flight, ball spin, speed and many more factors.

This is where Vokey gets it right, with their 6 grind varieties they are able to cater for almost all golfers.

What Exactly Is Wedge Bounce

The bounce of the wedge is the angle of the leading edge to the sole of the club. This part of the wedge is the part that makes contact with the ground.

In simple terms, you do not want the club to dig into the ground or bounce too much off the ground, ideally you want the wedge to slide along the ground making perfect contact with the ball.

The higher the bounce of the wedge, the higher the leading edge sits off the ground. Playing with the correct bounce and grind will allow you to optimize your spin, control, flight and power when around the greens.

The famous Bob Vokey says that “Bounce is your friend,” higher bounce wedges have more forgiveness, the club won’t dig in as much allowing for decent shots even on poor struck shots.

F GRIND

The F grind is the all purpose wedge grind, it is used more in a sand wedge and gap wedge as it is suited more for full shots, and shots hit with a square face. It is a traditional wedge sole. On the PGA Tour it is the most common wedge sole on players sand wedges.

We would recommend the sole to all levels of golfers in their sand wedges, from high to low handicap players, it will give you the most consistent results.

M GRIND

This is Bob Vokey’s favorite wedge, more commonly used in the lob wedge and sand wedge, it is designed for players that like to manufacture shots by opening and closing the wedge.

You need to have a shallow, sweeping swing to use this wedge. We recommend this wedge to mid to low handicap players, you need to have a decent amount of skill around the greens to fully benefit from this wedge.

S GRIND

A full sole is the main feature of the S Grind, the trailing edge of the sole has been grinded away to allow the wedge to slide through the turf easier.

The S Grind is best for moderate to firm ground conditions and is best suited for players that like to control the loft of the wedge with their hand position.

We would recommend this club in either a sand or lob wedge, and for low handicap players only, it requires a lot of skill to use the full potential of this wedge.

D GRIND

This is my favorite wedge, I generally have my hands to low and come a little steep on my chip shots, the D grind has the heel, toe and trailing edge grinded away, this allows you to manipulate the face for a variety of shots as well has give you some heel relief when you come a little too steep on it.

Perfect for all conditions, we recommend this wedge to all skill levels, it is easy to hit and forgiving when you stick the ball poorly.

Tiger Woods has his wedge grinded similar to this, most tour players change their wedges depending on the turf conditions, Tiger does not like doing this, the D grind gives you the ability to open or close the face on all turf conditions.

K GRIND

The K grind is the ultimate bunker wedge, it has the highest bounce in the Vokey line up, however the K grind can prove a handy club if you struggle with your chipping, the high bounce gives you loads of forgiveness, as it helps the clubs slide through the turf, be careful if you play on hard surfaces, the K grind wedge might bounce to much.

We recommend this wedge to all high handicap players in a lob wedge, the versatility and easiness to hit makes it a winner.

L GRIND

The L grind is the ‘players wedge’, this wedge is designed for players with a lot of skill around the greens. The L grind features the lowest bounce out of the Vokey range, similar to the D grind, it has heel, toe and trailing edge relief.

It is perfect for firm condition as the low bounce will help you slide the wedge through the turf. We recommend this wedge to low handicap or skilled players.

Which Grind Is Most Forgiving?

The most forgiving wedge in the Vokey line up is the K grind, the high bounce and full sole prevent the club from digging into the ground. This will give you more confidence around the greens, helping you hit even better shots.

We recommend this wedge only in a lob wedge, the bounce sole is too wide to use in a sand or gap wedge.

Which Is Best For Sand?

Vokey says the K grind is the best from out of the bunker, the full sole and high bounce make it easy to get the ball out of the sand.

We do agree with this, however we also feel the D and M grind can work well out of the bunker too, both have their trailing edges ground away allowing you to open up the face easily when in the bunker.

Which Is Best For Full Shots?

The F grind is going to be the best Vokey wedge for full shots, the narrow sole glides through the turf easily.

The S grind can also work nicely for full shots, as the sole is also narrow.

What Grind For High Handicappers?

The K grind should be your go to in a lob wedge if you are a high handicap, it has the most bounce out of all the Vokey wedges. The wide sole and high bounce helps the wedge slide through the turf instead of digging in.

For the sand and gap wedges, we would recommend the F and S grind, this will come down to looks and preferences, however both of these would work well.

What Grind Do Pros Use?

Professionals all have their own preferences, a lot of them get their wedges custom grinded, this will give them ultimate control, spin, flight and power around the greens.

The most common grind in a gap wedge would be the F grind, the S grind would be the most common sand wedges, and a mixture of M, D and L grind would be in the lob wedge.

Vokey Wedges Vs Other Manufacturers

Vokey has a lot more options compared to other manufactures, Vokey has 6 options where other manufactures only have one or two.

We are not too sure of the reason behind this, one reason might be because Vokey has such a big market share they can have more options, whereas other manufactures need to put their focus on one or two grinds.

Having so many options can be a pro and a con, we feel with so many options this might make consumers confused and actually turn them away from the brand.

Callaway Grind Vs Vokey

Callaway JAWS wedges have one main grind called the C grind, this is similar to the Vokey M grind.

The heel and trailing edge is ground away giving the golfer some heel relief. This also allows you to open and close the face, giving you the option to play a variety of different shots.

TaylorMade Grind Vs Vokey?

TaylorMade has a little more options than the Callaway, but nowhere near as much as the Vokey.

The TaylorMade MG3 wedges have 3 bounce options and two grind options, they don’t have names like the Vokey and Callaway. The MG3 grinds are similar to the S and M grind in the Vokey range. The S grind style caters for the golfers that like to play shots with a square face, and the M grind still caters for the golfer that likes to manipulate the face to play a variety of shots.

Conclusion

Titleist Vokey offers the golfers the most variety when it comes to wedges, their extensive grind options caters for almost all golfers.

The only thing they don’t have is a game improvement wedge, although they say that is their K grind, we feel there are better options out there in that category.

All in all the Vokey wedge still sits high above its competitors. We highly recommend getting a fitting or at least some advice from your local pro or fitter.
