The Taylormade P790

With the P790 line of irons, Taylormade has really veered off in their own direction. To the naked eye, these irons seem like typical blade irons. But the blades are actually hollow. Well, not hollow, they are lined with something Taylormade is calling speed foam.

The purpose of the speed foam is to support the ultra-thin club faces of these irons and to deliver a softer feel upon impact and produce more ball speed. Aside from the speed foam, these Taylormade irons are made from very high-quality materials.

They are all tungsten-weighted and feature a 4140 grade forged carbon steel design. Overall, these irons play long and high. You get effortless loft on them and they sound incredibly sweet.

The Titleist AP3

The Titleist AP3 irons are a comparable set to the Taylormade P790’s but there are some fundamental differences. The hollow blades of the Titleist AP3’s feature an L-Face insert which is designed to support the club face at the moment of impact and launch the ball higher.

And these are definitely geared more toward game improvement. They are incredibly forgiving even on off-center shots, all in a club head shape that intermediate-advanced players will be familiar with.

Club Options

The Taylormade P790 irons come in a variety of options. First of all, you can choose from a left or right handed set. Secondly, they let you choose between graphite and steel shafts. There are also options for regular, senior, stiff and extra stiff flex.

Now, you certainly get less options with the Titleist AP3’s but there is a valid reason for it. The Titleist AP3’s feature ascending mass shafts that gradually get heavier the higher up in the set you go. So not all the irons have the same shaft weight.

But you do get a choice between True Temper AMT Black grips and Golf Pride Tour velvet white grips with the Titleist AP3’s.

 

 

Who Can Benefit?

It became clear pretty quickly that the Titleist AP3 irons were geared more toward intermediate players. They play long and are very forgiving. The Taylormade P790 clubs also play long but the head design is geared more towards precision players.

For example, the Taylormade irons feature minimal offset heads so right off the bat, you can tell that they are tailored more (no pun intended) toward players who already feel comfortable with their swing and accuracy.

But as long as you know what kind of player you are, you will find both of these iron sets equally beneficial.

 

Composition Comparison

The Taylormade P790 heads are made from carbon steel. With the shaft, you get the options of either true temper dynamic gold 105 stainless steel or UST Recoil 780 or 760 graphite shafts so you more or less get your pick in terms of flex. These clubs also come stock with Golf Pride Tour 360 grips.

The heads of the Titleist AP3 irons feature a machine milled high MOI face and a hollow blade design. The shafts are more unique in the sense that they are ascending mass shafts. That means they get a bit beefier and heavier as you move from the longer to the shorter irons.

While this minimizes flex options it does allow for better control in the shorter irons and greater distance with the long irons. The True Temper and Golf Pride Tour grip options help to offset some of the lack of flex options.

 

Performance Comparison

The Taylormade P790 irons definitely give you more drop and stop control while the Titleist AP3 were more forgiving on less than accurate strikes. The long irons of both sets gave comparable distance while the shorter irons felt more comfortable on the Taylormade irons.

If we were to give an overall assessment on the performance of each, we would say that the Taylormade P790’s provided the best all-around performance, but bear in mind that you will probably have to be a seasoned player to reap the full benefits from these irons.

 

Price Comparison

The complete set of Taylormade P790 irons will run you about $1,500 while the Titleist AP3 iron set will cost around $1,000.

So which set should you go for? That will surely depend on your level of play. While both of these iron sets are very well-designed, they were clearly meant for different kinds of players. If you are a beginner-intermediate, go with the Titleist AP3 iron set.
