The TaylorMade M4 and TaylorMade Sim 2 Iron sets are a few seasons old now as the Sim 2 Irons were released in 2021 and the M4 Iron set in 2018.

In this post, I conduct a TaylorMade M4 Vs TaylorMade Sim 2 golf iron review to reveal which older-generation TaylorMade set suits you best.

TaylorMade M4 IRONS OVERVIEW

The M4 Iron set was the TaylorMade Golf Iron set released in the 2018 and 2019 seasons.

The descendant of the M2 and M3 Iron series. 

The most significant improvement was the higher launch angle that enhances carry and total distance compared to the previous ranges.

Another vital factor is the larger clubface and sole, which enhances the sweet spot size for better forgiveness on mishit shots and a solid distance rating.

TaylorMade SIM 2 IRONS OVERVIEW

The TaylorMade Sim 2 Iron set was released to market in 2021, making it a few seasons newer than their M4 Iron series, meaning the technology was slightly updated and improved.

However, just how much innovation did TaylorMade improve with these Irons?

The Sim 2 Iron series succeeded the lower CG Sim range, and it was clear to notice that the Sim 2 Iron set significantly enhanced the feel factor and delivered better accuracy for straighter strikes.

This Iron set is available in a standard option and a hybrid-iron combo, just like its younger sibling of the Sim series.

These Irons offer rapid ball speed and enhanced forgiveness with their sizeable clubface, which is an ideal option for mid to high-handicap players still finding their way.

TaylorMade M4 IRONS FIRST IMPRESSIONS

At first glance, the TaylorMade M4 Iron set is an exceptional game-improvement Iron set that suits most average golf players.

I noticed how the Ribcor technology feature enhanced my ball speed at impact.

My launch angle was significantly higher than usual, increasing the carry distance and overall length with a lower spin factor.

Furthermore, I found that the broader clubhead and thinner 360 Undercut feature aided forgiveness and inspired a new level of confidence when I mishit several shots and finished in the light rough instead of the long grass.

This was due to the weight savings and distribution to the lower part of the club head, enhancing the launch again and proving incredibly forgiving.

TaylorMade M4 KEY TECHNOLOGY

RibCOR Technology: TaylorMade utilized their famed RibCOR technology to boost ball speeds and for a more effective energy transfer to your ball at impact.

Two bars are positioned on each side of the Face Slots, stiffening the clubhead perimeter for a more flexy rebound and an effective energy transfer for quicker ball speeds.

Faceslots: TaylorMade boosted the clubface flexibility on the M4, generating rapid ball speed across an expanded area.

The engineers applied Faceslot technology to the heel and toe of the club to ensure a consistent pace on mishits.

Speed Pocket: Callaway continues its technological advances with the speed pocket feature that teams up with the RibCOR technology.

The Speed Pocket is a slot at the bottom of the sole near the low part of the clubface where golfers most commonly mishit their shots.

It is constructed to enhance the club head ball speed and flexibility for optimal distance and improve forgiveness when we hit off-center shots.

360° Undercut and Fluted Hosel: Finally, The M4 Iron set contains a 360° Undercut feature, a  Fluted hosel, and a 1,5mm face thickness.

The idea was to improve the launch factor and overall forgiveness by redistributing the weight savings to the bottom area of the club head. 

This feature is efficient when golfers mishit the ball on the low side, receiving a decent strike from this zone.

TaylorMade SIM 2 FIRST IMPRESSIONS

At first glance, I noticed that this Iron set has a broader sole and a higher loft as shown in the specs table below for a game-improvement Iron set.

Although Mizuno has a reputation for forged Iron sets for more serious players, they break the tradition here to offer a more forgiving and easy-hitting Iron set.

After thorough testing and market research, I found out that this iron set performs pretty much as advertised, the speed with a higher level of forgiveness.

I appreciated the Nickel Chromoly feature that has reduced the face by 8%. The Hot Metal material felt very sturdy, especially on mishits.

TaylorMade SIM 2 IRONS KEY TECHNOLOGY

Thru-Slot Speed Pocket: TaylorMade claimed that this technology feature was to design the longer irons clubfaces with the same speed as the Sim 2 Driver series. 

This technology boosts the clubface flex to create a quick rebound on low clubface mishits.

This enhances the flexibility for excellent forgiveness and optimum ball speeds.

Cap Back Design:  TaylorMade utilized a multi-material cap back design that links with the Speed Pocket technology to maximize face rebound at contact for quick ball speed and more distance. 

Additionally, players will appreciate the smoother feel and enhanced acoustics provided by the cap back construction that supports the clubhead’s topline.

Echo Damping System: TaylorMade’s engineers utilized the additional hollow space created by the cap back design to insert an Echo Damping System.

The function of this technology is to absorb clubface vibrations by placing several contact points around the clubface.

Inverted Cone Technology ICT: ICT technology creates a larger active zone around the clubface for minimal side spin on mishits.

As a result, it has often helped me reduce sidespin to generate straighter shots for improved accuracy.

Low Center Of Gravity (CG): TaylorMade SIM 2 irons are fitted with a lower and deeper CG to encourage a higher launching flight.

I find slow to moderate swing speeds will appreciate this feature for an effortless lift and consistent ball flight on approach.
