Short game performance is all about control and being able to get under the ball even in tight lies. This is something to keep in mind as you shop for wedges and as we review the Taylormade Hit-Toe 3 wedges.

First and foremost, it should be noted that hi-toe wedges like the Taylormade Hit-Toe 3’s are preferable when you can open up the face consistently. The main goal of this wedge design is to keep the CG nice and high for a more controlled launch and better spin control.

With that all being said, we must ask the question, “is this kind of design beneficial for high handicap players?” Well, we couldn’t answer that question without testing an actual set of hit-toe wedges.

And what better hi-toe wedges to test than the Taylormade Hit-Toe 3 wedges. Will the Taylormade Hit-Toe 3 wedges be a good fit in your bag? Let’s take a look at the details.

Taylormade Hit-Toe 3 Wedges Overview

With immediately stunning looks and incredibly acute spin control, the Hi-Toe 3 wedges endear themselves to a wide variety of players.

The Taylormade Hit-Toe 3 wedges provide a lot of value to the right kind of player. It should be noted that these are raw wedges which means that they will rust and oxidize over time.

Raw wedges aren’t plated which means they are subject to the elements. However, rusting is actually beneficial for most irons because it adds texture and spin control to the face.

However, when we tested the Taylormade Hit-Toe 3 wedges, we really didn’t feel that they needed much more texture. Of course, we didn’t have them long enough for them to rust up on us; but our testers still noted a tremendous amount of grit, feel and spin control from these wedges as they were.

That’s because the Taylormade Hit-Toe 3 wedges have full faces of deep grooves with milled ribs placed in between the grooves. These are some of the highest spinning wedges we ever tested to be quite honest.

The grooves extend all across the face and from the topline all the way down to the sole. Plus, they sport a very handsome raw bronze finish.

Are Taylormade Hi-Toe 3 Wedges Forgiving?

This is where things got a little tricky for our testing party.

For this review, most of our high handicap testers took to the course with the Taylormade Hit-Toe 3 wedges. They mentioned that it was very easy to get under the ball with these wedges.

Even in tight lies, our testers were able to cut through the tall turf and achieve a low, controlled launch. They also really liked the fact that the Taylormade Hit-Toe 3’s didn’t send their balls sailing past the green on short approaches.

Are the Taylormade Hi-Toe 3 Wedges Good for Beginners & High Handicappers?

We all really liked the fact that the Taylormade Hit-Toe 3 wedges don’t balloon your launch out of control. However, some of the spin characteristics were a bit lost on our high handicap testers.

While our low handicap testers were able to take full advantage of the large ZTP RAW grooves and the raised ribs in between the grooves, our higher handicap testers were still struggling to stop the ball on the green.

That all being said, every tester in our group remarked that the Taylormade Hit-Toe 3 wedges provided excellent turf interaction on almost every lie.

Should you Buy the Taylormade Hi-Toe 3 Wedges or the Taylormade Milled Grind 3 Black Wedges?

The Milled Grind 3 Black wedges are also raw and feature aggressive grooves.

However, in terms of spin control, the Taylormade Hit-Toe 3 wedges still came out on top. While it was easier to play with a closed face with the Milled Grind 3 wedges, they didn’t offer the same kind of smooth turf interaction as the Taylormade Hit-Toe 3 wedges.
