PXG 0211 Irons Vs Taylormade P790 Review & Specs 2023

The PXG 0211 and Taylormade P790 irons both represent accessible sets with premium features.

Every so often we get the opportunity to test irons that we are really excited about – this was one of those times for us.

These are very interesting iron sets as they come from manufacturers known for their premium, performance irons.

Yet many of the features are predicated on increasing forgiveness and ease of use for perhaps, higher handicap players.

Take a look at what we found out about these two exciting iron sets.

PXG 0211 Vs Taylormade P790 Overview

The interesting thing about this comparison is that for once, the PXG clubs weren’t the most expensive ones in the room.

But that should tell you how premium these Taylormade irons are. What marks both of these iron sets are premium features that you would normally see in pure player’s performance irons.

And while there are certainly player’s performance features in both sets, they should be quite usable for higher handicap players.

PXG 0211 Key Features

The PXG 0211 irons were built to feel amazing but provide the player with forgiveness rarely seen in PXG clubs.

The engine powering this added forgiveness is the 360 undercut channel.

You have probably heard of undercut faces (a channel running along the bottom). But PXG took it a step further and bored a channel completely around the sweet spot.

This increases the area of the face that flexes which, from our testing, resulted in faster ball speed on shots away from the sweet spot.

Adding to the ball speed is the incredibly thin maraging steel face construction.

Taylormade P790 Key Features

The Taylormade P790 irons feature a beautiful, fast and sleek muscle back design.

So right away, they give the look of a player’s performance iron at point of address.

However, the hollow-body design and forged L-Face insert work together to increase ball speeds and enhance forgiveness on shots made near the sole.

Like the PXG 0211’s the Taylormade P790’s have an incredible feel thanks to a forged face and body.

PXG 0211 Vs PXG 0211 DC’s

The 0211 DC irons from PXG are even more affordable and may be the optimal choice for players looking for higher launch.

When testing the 0211’s against the 0211 DC’s we noticed that  the DC’s yield higher and easier launch. DC stands for “Dual Core” and it refers to the polymer core inside the hollow head that helps preserve impact energy.

While the DC’s produce higher launch angles and have a softer feel, they are a lot less workable than the 0211’s.

Taylormade P790 Vs P770’s

If you are looking for a true player’s performance iron, the P770 series may be more up your ally.

It really comes down to a shorter blade and more compact head. The P770’s sports a smaller profile and more of a player’s look at point of address. Still, it has all the same construction and forgiveness features as the Taylormade P790 irons.

Who is Each Set for?

Both of these iron sets would be great for anyone who wants the look and feel of a premium set.

More specifically, mid to high handicappers who don’t want to look like they are playing distance or beginner irons.

Composition Comparison

This is perhaps where these two iron sets differentiate themselves from each other the most.

The PXG 0211’s have a hollow-body design with a maraging steel face. The Taylormade P790 irons also have a hollow body design; but are made from forged carbon steel.

The difference is that the Taylormade P790’s have a softer, more satisfying feel.

Performance Comparison

The Taylormade P790’s definitely played more consistently.

Repeatable distance was on point and shot dispersion was tight with the Taylormade P790’s thanks in part to the forged design.

While the 0211’s were plenty forgiving, the polymer insert makes them less consistent and less predictable overall.

Price Comparison

Believe it or not, the Taylormade irons will actually cost you less than the PXG ones.

For a brand new, complete set of Taylormade P790 irons, you are looking at about $1,300. A new set of PXG 0211’s will run you anywhere from $600 to $800.

Final Thoughts

There was a clear winner as a result of our testing.

Overall, the Taylormade P790 irons gave the better long and short-game performance. While they lacked the desirable amount of short-game spin, high and mid handicappers will love the distance that the long irons yield.

The PXG 0211’s are no slouches; but they emphasized forgiveness and not much else.

Meanwhile the Taylormade P790’s are at least as forgiving as the 0211’s and do more for the player looking for all-around performance.
