Hollow-head irons have become a revolution in their own right. They can add distance and precision to your game.

Ping has been one of the major proponents of the hollow-head movement. It’s a perfect brand to look into if you’re thinking of scoring your first (or 2nd or 3rd) set of hollow-head irons.

There is some debate however, as to what hollow-head ping iron model is the best. Both of the iron sets we are going to be reviewing today have passionate advocates. But which one would be the best for your game. We help you find out in today’s comparison review.

An Overview Of Both Irons

 Ping i500

The Ping i500 irons were debuted back in 2018. They immediately wowed players with their sleek muscle-back design.

In fact, many players didn’t realize they were hollow-head irons until they played them or read into their specs.

Ping G710

With the Ping G710, the company looked to produce a friendlier-looking muscle-back hollow-head iron.

They blew the head size up and finished it with a sleek, performance-enhancing black hydropearl finish.

Ping i500 Key Features

The i500 irons combine a C300 maraging steel (an aerospace grade alloy) with a 17-4 stainless steel body.

The face is also forged to improve feel. The face grooves are milled and provide good spin control on approaches.

Ping G710 Key Features

The G710’s have the same type of maraging steel face but have also incorporated variable thickness architecture to increase forgiveness.

Forgiveness is also enhanced thanks to a notched hosel that preserves weight to be placed via tungsten heel and toe weights.

Who Is Each Set For?

Working through each set made it pretty clear who each one is best suited for.

The i500 with their lesser offset would be better-suited to low handicap players.

The G710’s have a larger footprint which, will inspire confidence in higher handicap players.

Composition and Distance Comparison

These two irons are built very much the same. Both feature maraging steel faces with muscle-back heads. The difference in distance is more stark.

The minimal offset and the hinging face of the i500’s were reaching more greens for our lower handicap testers than the G710’s.

Forgiveness Performance & Feel Comparison

The G710’s are certainly the more forgiving irons. The larger heads and the perimeter tungsten weighting generates high MOI.

We liked the forged feel of the i500 irons, though. The i500’s also have a wide, smooth sole that made for better turf interaction.

In terms of performance, the G710’s did have one distinct advantage over the i500’s: the hydropearl finish makes them more accurate in light rain. However, in normal conditions we liked the milled grooves of the i500’s. They allowed for better greenside spin control.

Price Comparison

  • Ping i500 – $1100

  • Ping G710 – $1300
