Mina Harigae: Early Life and Parents

From Superstition Mountain to Pine Needles, the road to becoming the first woman golfer to win over $1 million as a runner-up has not been all fun and games for Mina Harigae.

Mina’s mother Mafumi left Osaka, Japan when she was 12 years old while her father Mamongakis went to the US in his twenties to attend culinary school.

They met, got married, and had Mina  before opening Takara Sushi Restaurant in Monterey, California. More than 30 years later, they still work every day from the same popular location.

When the Covid pandemic shut down the world, Takara was one of the many small businesses that were adversely impacted–Mina even made an appeal for support to her Instagram followers.

Mina saw how hard her parents worked to raise her and she felt motivated to succeed “so she wouldn’t be recruited into the family business.”

When she first picked up a golf club at the Bayonet and Black Horse Club as a child, little did she know of the arduous road ahead.

Mina Harigae: Personal Life, Husband, Family, and More

Besides her parents, Mina’s most ardent supporters are her fiancé Travis Kreiter, her swing coach Jeff Fisher, and her mental coach Dawn Woodard.

Mina and Travis met at Superstition Mountain when she became an honorary member–he worked at the clubhouse as an assistant professional at the time.

Travis is no stranger to professional golf circles and worked previously with Patrick Peterson who once sponsored his dreams of playing on the PGA Tour.

The first time Mina challenged Travis to a round with a $5 bet, he defeated her thoroughly. He wasn’t sorry about it and Mina liked that

They’ve got chemistry and a great rapport on and off the golf course, and Travis is not only her fiancé and golf partner, but he is also her caddie.

Mina Harigae: Career

Until Mina’s unexpected T2 finish at the 2022 US Women’s Open, most of her career highlights took place during her amateur days.

Following her impressive four consecutive wins at the California Women’s Amateur Championship between 2001 and 2004, Mina went on to win the US Women’s Amateur Public Links when she was just 17 years old–she’d been taught by none other than Jim Langley.

Mina’s promotion to the LPGA took place after she won the Epson Tour–previously known as the Symetra Tour and the Futures Tour– three times.

From an initial ranking of 44 in 2013, Mina fell all way to 109th in 2019. She briefly considered retiring but rallied and turned to her amateur days’ coach, Jeff Fisher.

Fast forward through a global pandemic, four victories at the 2020 Cactus Tour, and a team win at the 2021 Solheim Cup to her surprising achievement at the US Women’s Open in 2022.

Mina Harigae: Net Worth

At the 2021 Meijer LPGA Classic, Mina Harigae might have been signing autographs on Rolex magazine adverts, but she didn’t have the financial security of a sponsor.

While she dominated the Cactus Tour, Mina was fighting tooth and nail simply to pay rent as professional golf player.

Her least profitable year as a pro to date was in 2016. She participated in 19 events, made the cut on nine of them to earn just $46,508.

In 2020, she only missed the cut in two of the eleven events in which she played and pocketed $327,376. She also recorded her then career best position tying for third at the CME Group Tour Championship.

The following year, Mina almost doubled her earnings when she participated in 21 events–including the 2021 Solheim Cup–made the cut in 18 of them and pocketed $791,157.

Mina’s 2022 was peppered with earnings no bigger than the Cognizant Founders Cup where she tied for twelfth and took home $46,366.

None of this could have prepared her for the US Women’s Open $1,08 million runner-up prize money that brought her total career earnings to a cool $4,015,167.
