Matt Jones: Early Life And Parents

Matt Jones was born on April 19, 1980, to parents Kevin and Vicki Jones.

The Joneses originate from Sydney, Australia, and later found themselves in the United States, where Matt attended Arizona State University.

Although we don’t know about Matt’s personal life, we know that his father worked as a network computer manager, and his mother was in the public relations industry. After being awarded the first-team All-American at Arizona State University, he then followed on to turn professional in 2021.

So, where did his passion for golf come from? Matt got his love for golf around the age of 6 when he met golfing superstar and legend Greg Norman, who was the number one golfer in the world.

Matt’s father and uncle taught him to play golf when he was younger. As he grew to love the game, he started spending most of his days with his brother Brett, who is older than him.

A love for golf appears in the family as Brett is a professional golfer in New Jersey. He played in a PGA championship in 2015, where his younger brother Matt was the 36-hole leader.

Matt Jones: Career Golf

Let’s look at Matt Jones’ career highlights through the years.

2008 – Rookie Season

Every great golfer was once an amateur, but for Matt Jones, his rookie season was very successful.

He tied for 4th at the Honda Classic and the Buick Open and scored a hefty paycheck of $775,899. Unfortunately, despite his successes this season, he did not make it to the top 125 of the money lists. This left him with a conditional status for the 2009 season.

2009

2009 was the first season he had two top-ten finishes. He placed 5th at the Buick invitational and the John Deere Classic. Following that, he obtained his PGA Tour card at the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament in December, where he finished 3rd – an impressive start to his PGA career.

2010-11

Jones finished 5th for the second season in a row at the John Deere Classic in 2010 and 7th at the Quail Hollow Championship. A 2010 highlight for the golfer was placing 2nd at the Australian Open.

2013

Fast forwarding to 2013, Jones did significantly better in his PGA Tour season. He placed 2nd at the Greenbrier Classic, 6th at the Memorial Tournament, 5th at Wyndham Championship, 8th at the BMW Championship, and 7th at the John Deere Classic. He finished the season in 6th place at the Australian Open.

2014

2014 is a year Jones will never forget. Jones secured his first PGA Tour win at the 2014 Shell Houston Open, defeating the American golfer Matt Kuchar on the first playoff hole! This happened when he made the memorable 42-yard chip-in for a birdie.

It was such a significant victory for Jones; it secured him the last entrance into the Master’s and placed him 41st on the official World Golf Ranking.

2015

Jones participated in the 2015 PGA Championship, where he was neck in neck with Jason day, leading two strokes ahead at the 36th hole. Unfortunately, Jones dropped four strokes towards the championship end and finished the tournament at T-21.

But he did not let that stop his game. Jones went on to participate in the Australian PGA Tour, where he won his very first home title! He secured his victory at the Emirates Australian Open, one of the Australian Majors (so yes, it’s a pretty big deal!). This gave him entrance to the 2016 Open Championship.

2019

Few golfers have managed to secure so many victories in their careers. Matt Jones is definitely an exception. Nearing the end of the 2019 season, Jones secured his second Emirates Australian Open title.

2021

2021 was an excellent year for Jones as he won his first Honda Classic title since his PGA victory in 2014.

2021-22

Matt Jones: Social Media Accounts

Like most sports stars, Matt Jones is somewhat active on social media.

He only has ±6,000 followers on Instagram and last shared an Instagram post six weeks ago – perhaps it is just not for him anymore! He also appears to be very specific in what he shares. It is very little about family and a lot about golf – perhaps to respect the privacy of his children and wife, which we always commend.

It appears to be the same for Twitter; the last time he was active was November 2022, when he retweeted a post stating that he was headed to Adelaide for a tournament in April!

We don’t blame him for not being the best at social media; when you are that successful, we suppose you don’t have to be!
