History of Wilson Golf

The history of Wilson Golf has very unlikely roots. The company can trace its beginnings back to the meat packing industry of New York. The company Schwarzschild & Suzburger was a meat packing company that got so successful, they started to expand.

In 1914, the company started using animal byproducts from their slaughterhouses to make other products. One of the first sporting good the company ever produced tennis racket strings and baseball shoes. In 1915, the company would change it’s name to the Thomas E. Wilson Company.

In the same year, the company acquired Hetzinger Knitting Mills and used their resources to produce their first golf products: golf balls and caddie bags. Over the coming decades, the Wilson company would create stronger ties to the sporting world and eventually become known exclusively for their sporting goods.

Since the early 90’s Wilson has been a common brand among PGA Tour pros. They are one of the oldest and most historic American golf brands.

One of our favorite clubs in this set is the #5 hybrid. It is very easy to hit with and bridges the gap nicely between the 5 wood and the 6 iron. The sole is nice and smooth too so it works as a good rescue club.

The driver in this set sports a cool black PVD finish. This feature isn’t just about good looks though; it also works to reduce glare in sunny conditions. This would be a great set for beginners and mid handicappers because all of the clubs have a very low CG placed in the rear of the heads.

This promotes better forgiveness, distance and will help keep your shots online. The set also includes cavity back irons with a nice, chunky sole that will help you get the ball up in the air and produce nice carry distances.

Best Driver – Wilson Cortex

This is one of the most versatile and innovative drivers we have ever tested. The Wilson Cortex driver has a sliding track weight that can be moved to the back or front of the head. In the front position, we were noticing really low spin rates and in the back, MOI was increased significantly.

Then there is an 8 gram weight in the toe and a 2 gram weight in the heel. You can move the 8 gram weight to the heel for a draw bias or you can move the 2 gram weight to the toe for a clear fade bias. The Cortex driver also features a multi-material carbon fiber/titanium head.

This allows for better rigidity and stability without adding a ton of weight to the head. For sure the high MOI and forgiveness achieved by the combination of sliding track weight and multi-material head design are the best things about this driver.

Best Premium Irons – WILSON Staff Model CB Men’s Golf Irons

This is a very innovative putter for a pretty reasonable price. We really liked the grid pattern alignment marker which features parallel and perpendicular lines so you can really visualize how the ball is going to roll in relation to your desired line.

This would be a great choice for senior players because the shaft is counter-weighted. This means you have easier control over the putter and will have to exert less stress on your wrist. In reality though, pretty much anyone can wield this mallet putter successfully on the green.

Built for the needs of today’s lady golfers, the Wilson SGI Ladies Club Set is a great choice for mid to high handicap players. We really liked the deep cavity back irons that make high launch and good distance much easier than traditional cavity backs.
