Is Cobra Golf A Good Brand – How They Compete On Price & Performance

If you have tuned into golf in the past two years, you have probably seen the longest driver in the games history, Bryson Dechambeau, proudly sporting the full range of clubs from Cobra and winning plenty of big tournaments.

When it comes to Drivers, Hybrids and Woods, Cobra can stand toe to toe with the best brands in the world in terms of performance, quality and value. In Players irons too, they are extremely competitive. When it comes to distance irons and game improvement irons, however, Cobra is still some way off the big boys like Taylormade, Titleist and Callaway. They are improving with every iteration however.

Bryson is not the only Tour pro using Cobra to achieve success in the game, others include Rickie Fowler, legend Greg Norman and Ladies ambassador Lexi Thompson.

We can easily see from the star studded line up that Cobra is indeed a solid brand for Pros, but what about the average player, high handicapper and mid handicapper. How do these clubs stack up against the giants like Callaway, Titleist & Taylormade.

In this article, we are going to take a look at all of their offerings and hopefully you can decide on whether to go with the brand or not, compared to it’s competitors, but first let’s take a quick look at the history of the brand.

Cobra Golf was founded way back in 1973 by Thomas L. Crow, a former Australian open winner who noticed Americans were buying clubs that were not suited to their game and he set up a brand that was tailored directly towards average players and game improvement.

Cobra were the first brand to create a Driving iron and they also pioneered graphite shafts which were lighter and aimed at average players, seniors and women.

Their ‘Oversized irons’ became a big hit in the US and the company quickly grew to a revenue of over $5 million as a result.

The company underwent a number of acquisitions over the years and is currently owned by the Puma brand who are based in California, USA.

How It Compares To The Competition

The Cobra XL is around the same quality as the Callaway Strata but it costs more.

It offers more in the way of customization, however and can configured in a way that exactly suits your game.

Cobra XL goes head to head the Callaway Edge and Taylormade RBZ sets, costs a bit less and is almost on par performance wise.

Other Driver, Wood & Hybrid Ranges To Consider:

Cobra Speedzone Vs Taylormade Sim Max

The Taylormade Sim Max is one of the most popular club ranges on the market and the Cobra Speedzone range is right up their alongside it in terms of performance and slightly ahead when it comes to value.

We would say that the Cobra Speedzone is slightly ahead of the Sim Max range in the drivers, woods and irons.

Cobra Speedzone Vs Callaway Mavrik Max

The Speedzone and Mavrik range came out at the same time and are both very high performing clubs.

For us the value and exception performance of the Speedzone range is enough for us to favour it over the Mavrik set.

Other Cobra Irons

Other Cobra Irons worth considering are the F-Max speedlights which are incredibly light and forgiving and the forged tech irons which are used by tour professional Rickie Fowler.

How They Compare To The Sim Max Irons

For us, the Taylormade Sim max irons are quite a bit superior and while Cobra is right up there, competing in terms of their drivers, woods and irons, the other top brands seem to perform better when it comes to those longer clubs.

How The Radspeed Irons Compare To The Callaway Mavrik

The Radspeed’s and Mavriks are a little closer together than with the Sim’s but the Mavriks are still taking this one down for us in terms of performance.

The one length Radspeeds seem to be somewhat of a disaster and the other top brands seem to have it a lot more correct in their approach to players distance and game improvement irons.

Overall Cobra Brand Recommendation

Cobra are without doubt a good brand. If you are just getting into golf, their beginners clubs are enough to take any other brands offerings for a ride and they also usually very well placed.

While their irons cannot yet compete with the other top brands, their drivers, woods and hybrids certainly can.

If you are on the fence about going with Cobra to get your game to the next level, you can rest assured that their clubs are among the very best on the market today.
