Flightscope Mevo vs Rapsodo Mobile Launch Monitor – Which One Should I Buy?

FS Mevo

If you are struggling with your shot and can’t afford a professional instructor, then you have probably considered a launch monitor.

Golf launch monitors provide valuable insight that you simply wouldn’t get no matter how much you practice and knowing the distances that you hit your strikes with each club can make all the difference.

But with all golf launch monitors, their worth comes down to accuracy. If you are not getting accurate measurements, there’s no hope of improving your swing. But you can’t tell how accurate a golf launch monitor will be until you give it a try for yourself.

Not everyone has the opportunity to test out different launch monitors and compare them side by side. So we took it upon ourselves to test out two of the most popular golf launch monitors on the market today and share the results with you.

It may not be a hands-on experience, but it’s the next best thing. So if you want to use a golf launch monitor to improve your swing and lower your handicap, read on to find out which of these two devices are the better buy.

The Flightscope Mevo

We heard a lot about the Flightscope Mevo long before we tested it. It is one of the highest-regarded launch monitors out there now, for an excellent price.

So first thing’s first; the Flightscope Mevo relies on Doppler radar for its distance measuring. The measurable range is somewhere between 15 and 430 yards as far as we could tell.

It is very easy to use. All you do is set it up between 4 and 7 feet behind you and the speech function will tell you the distance of each shot you take.

So what if you want to see stats other than distance? The Flightscope Mevo connects to your phone via Bluetooth to display all measurable metrics.

The metric information it provides include ball speed, club head speed, swing tempo, carry distance, smash factor, spin rate and distance. There is also a Flightscope app that you can use for more in-depth information.

For example, you can use the Flightscope App in tandem with your phone’s camera to record video of your shot and see superimposed data like flight path directly on the footage.

The Flightscope Mevo is a compact little unit that you can easily carry in your golf bag. And since it relies 100% on radar to measure shots, it can be used both indoors and outdoors.

Pros:

  • The Flightscope App has a lot of cool features that really help you understand your shot
  • It has a great battery life
  • You can play the recorded shot footage on most devices and TV’s
  • Speech function gives instant feedback so you don’t have to fumble with any devices to hear distance information
  • Accurate with drives and slightly less so with shorter shots
  • Great for use on the course, at the driving range and with your indoor practice set-up

Cons:

  • No display on the device itself
  • Relies mainly on your phone for its features
  • The Flightscope App drains your phone’s battery life pretty quickly – Turn it off after use
  • Phone syncing can be spotty

Overall Score: 95/100

The Rapsodo Mobile Launch Monitor

Rapsodo 4

The Rapsodo MLM has no qualms about using your phone for its functionality. In fact, it looks like a charging dock. The Rapsodo MLM utilizes a combination of radar and your phone’s camera and GPS for its readings.

That being said, there is a lot that the Rapsodo MLM can tell you. It gives you vivid information on shot direction and trajectory which it breaks down clearly on the app. You also get information on carry distance, ball speed, club speed, smash factor, launch angle and distance.

And the Rapsodo MLM has the same shot tracer feature as the Flightscope Mevo where you can see video footage of your shot enhanced with onscreen data in real time. At the end of your session, you can see detailed information on your shot dispersion laid out in a colorful graph.

The Rapsodo MLM keeps track of club information as well. The app archives your shot data so you can see your progress with each club over time.

So where does the GPS come into play? The Rapsodo MLM has a very cool feature that utilizes your phone’s GPS. You can see where each of your shots landed on whatever course or range you are on with this feature.

Pros:

  • Provides session and aggregate data
  • Very useful to see how you are performing with each club
  • Very clever use of phone features
  • Video function is also very helpful for seeing your shot
  • Easy to set up
  • The app is very helpful

Cons:

  • Relies 100% on your phone – Kills Battery
  • Short battery life
  • Not compatible with Android
  • Not for indoor use

Overall Score: 93/100

Performance Comparison

Flightscope Mevo

We were really impressed with how accurate both of these devices were on drives. For drives up to about 415 yards long, they were accurate to within 3 yards. And while the Rapsodo App is brimming with interactive and helpful features, we thought the Flightscope was a bit easier to use.

The speech function allowed us to keep our heads down the fairway and just keep swinging. The Rapsodo required us to work a bit harder to get the information we wanted after each swing. Plus, if you want to use the Rapsodo MLM for longer sessions, you better bring your mobile charger.

Which One Should You Buy?

Rapsodo 1

One of the things we liked more about the Flightscope Mevo was that it was a self-contained unit. While it does require an app to get more involved metrics, if all you want is distance information, you don’t have to fumble around with other devices.

The Rapsodo MLM was as accurate as the Flightscope Mevo and provided all the shot metrics we wanted and more. But the battery life of the unit itself and the fact that it draws so much of your phone’s battery to function was kind of a deal breaker for us.

The bottom line is that both of these devices are accurate enough for any golfer. But the ease of use of the Flightscope Mevo is what puts it ahead of the Rapsodo MLM. Both are great for improving your swing but if you want a more advanced experience, we would go with the Rapsodo MLM.
