It started maybe five years ago and now, in 2023, we see that pretty much every major golf club manufacturer is getting in on the act. Carbon fiber is slowly replacing titanium as the material of choice for golf club manufacturers and tour pros. That’s because it is extremely light and extremely strong.

The Callaway Paradym driver takes full advantage of this material; but how does it compare to an older Callaway driver like the Big Bertha? We wanted to find out so we tested both drivers side-by-side.

Introduction to the Callaway Paradym and Callaway Big Bertha B21 Drivers

“Consumers will be happy to know that the Callaway Pardym driver comes in three versions.”

For the sake of this comparison, we tested the standard Paradym driver. But you can also choose the Paradym X which lacks a sliding rear weight but has an elongated head shape that is evocative of the Callaway Mavrik Max driver. There is also Paradym Triple Diamond that has a 450cc head and interchangeable weights that allow you to tweak spin or enhance forgiveness.

The Callaway Big Bertha B21 is your classic game improvement driver. She’s big, forgiving and has internal draw bias to help fix your rightward miss. She’s pretty straightforward but incredibly valuable if you are just starting your golf journey.

Players can select from an Aldila Ascent PL Blue 40 shaft in light flex. There is also a Project X HZRDUS Gen 4 Silver 40 in regular and stiff flex. Another Project X HZRDUS Gen 4 Black 60 is also available as well as the Fujikura Ventus TR Blue in stiff and extra stiff flex.

Who is Best Suited to Each Driver?

But the addition of a sliding track weight in the Paradym driver will be beneficial to more types of players. The Callaway Big Bertha B21 will be great for players who tend to slice the ball or beginner players.

And we can attribute the added distance to the lower launch. One thing that players should take note of is that the Callaway Big Bertha B21 launches high. For beginners, that’s not a bad thing. But if you’re seeking max distance, the Callaway Paradym has a lower trajectory that will likely play longer for you.

Forgiveness

She has a really large footprint and a massive sweet spot. However, the Paradym driver certainly holds its own in the forgiveness arena. The MOI is higher in the Paradym driver which means that it doesn’t twist as much at impact. This will help keep more of your shots on-line.

As the newer driver, it’s not surprising that the Callaway Paradym sells for around $600. The older Callaway Big Bertha B21 can be had for $250-$350.

Which Driver Do We Recommend?

“Overall, the better driver is the Callaway Paradym.”

The all-carbon fiber chassis helps to keep the weight down which, for most of our testers, allowed for faster swing speeds. And in most cases, the faster you swing the further your ball will go. However, if maximum forgiveness is really what you need or if you are a pure beginner, we would recommend the Callaway Big Bertha B21.

It is slightly the more forgiving driver even as the Paradym can work with almost any kind of swing. The Paradym is good for beginners as well; but it’s the fact that it will still be viable after you break 100 that makes it the better driver.
