1. Pinemeadow Golf PGX Wedge

First up is the PGX wedge from Pinemeadow. You can get this wedge in 52, 56 or 60 degrees. We used the 56 loft version and found it to be very easy to use.

This wedge was particularly useful when we were just outside of the green and had to hit a shot that would hit the ground with low spin. It feels really good in the hands with its steel shaft and forgiving face.

Pros

• Was useful for chip shots just outside the green
• Comes in different loft ratings
• Really accurate for shots 120 yards and less

• The width is not ideal for thick grass

3. Cleveland Golf 2018 Men’s CBX Wedge

What we really liked about these wedges for beginners is that the sole is nice and wide. This is a very easy wedge to pick up and start using to improve your accuracy.

You can get these wedges with a steel or graphite shaft but for novices and those struggling with their mid and short game, we recommend the steel shafts. They are a bit heavier but they teach you how to hit chips with more control and to feel the turf under your shots more.

Pros

• The ample cavity back allows for more forgiveness
• The weight of these wedges is distributed very evenly
• You can get these wedges with a Flex shaft as well

• Doesn’t help you control spin too well
• Better used as a pure lob wedge

4. Wilson Staff Men’s Harmonized Black Chrome Golf Wedge

We found this wedge to work very well for center face shots and half shots. The sole grind design makes it easy for any player to hit even thin shots off-center of the face without it being a total disaster.

So yes, it is very forgiving. But we added this one to our list mainly because it is really good at filling the gap between sand wedges and 52 degree wedges. It is a great utilitarian wedge to have in your bag.

5. Texan Classics Gun Metal Wedge (Set of 3 52, 56, 60)

This set comes in 52, 56 and 60 degree loft ratings and feature a dark, gunmetal finish. The shafts are standard steel Flex and are adorned with all-weather grips.

This is a good set for beginners because they are very affordable but still offer a lot in terms of quality – especially with their solid, forged steel heads.

We tested the 52 degree wedge because we feel that it’s important for casual players to have a good gap wedge. The grind sole allowed for surprising control on higher carry shots and the toe design allows for good versatility.

This wedge was also useful because it shot well out of both sand and roughs (places you may find yourself in a lot as a newcomer to the game).

Pros

• Good 12 degrees of bounce
• Easy to get good spin with it
• Good for lob shots too

Cons

• The grooves on the face don’t feel very “grippy”
• The grip is kind of thin

7. Cleveland Golf Men’s Smart Sole 3 Wedge S

The 58 degree loft wedge features a 3-tiered sole which makes it a breeze for hitting your ball out of the rough or on courses with particularly lush grass. This is a very accurate wedge close to the green due in part to the even weight distribution.

This is a great wedge when there is not a lot of real estate between your lie and the green. An excellent pitch shot wedge.

8. Callaway Golf 2019 PM Grind Wedge

We tested the 60 degree loft wedge with a 12 degree bounce and found that the mid-sized sole made it easy to get good contact even in the rough. It features a 2.0 steel shaft and a nice Lamkin UTX grip.

The grooves are set on a 20 degree angle which is ideal for players who are struggling with spin control.

Rounding out our list is probably the highest quality wedge that is still useful for beginners and those trying to improve their game. These wedges are amazing for controlling bounce and you can get a ton of spin off of them as well.

You can get them between 46 and 64 degrees. We used the 58 degree wedge and it was very versatile. It allowed for short chips to the green, long pitches over hazards and the laser-milled face provides the perfect amount of friction on shots.

• Very well-engineered
• The back shaping feels good on flop shots

• A little pricey
• It adds some length to the ball

Our Selection

All of the aforementioned wedges would be a good choice whether you are just starting or need to improve your handicap. But our selection is the Wilson Harmonized Wedge.

We recommend this one to novices and high handicappers because it is extremely versatile and helps with different facets of the game. While the grip is a bit cheap which causes you to over-feel the impact on shots at times, you can pretty easily replace the grips and eliminate this club’s main weakness.
