Best Straw Golf Hats in 2023

There’s nothing quite like getting out and enjoying a round of Sunday golf with your usual foursome.

But when the sun is blasting down, how do you keep cool? Even when the sun is barely peeking out of the clouds, spending 4+ hours on the course, exposed to the elements can be physically draining.

Not to mention skin damage from UV rays. As Winter begins to loosen her grip, it’s important to gear up for the cunny golf season with the right equipment. When people hear “golf gear” they tend to only think about their clubs, balls, shoes and bags. But your headgear is just as important.

And while many of us may be tempted to throw on a basic baseball cap or a fancy canvas hat, straw golf hats are often the best option. Why? Because they are lightweight and offer full protection from the sun – well, at least most of them do.

You have to choose the right straw hat if you are an avid golfer so in the following article, we will be providing a basic guide on how to choose the right straw golf hat as well as a list of the best straw golf hats available online in 2023.

What Are We Looking for In A Quality Straw Golf Hat?

There are a few basic yet important design aspects that you need to keep in mind when shopping for a straw golf hat.

Please take a look at what those aspects are:

1. Lightweight Design

You may think that “straw hats” denote a lightweight material inherently. But not all straw hats are made equal. Ideally, you want a lightweight hat that won’t weigh you down – especially if you are walking the course. Check the product weight of any straw hat you are thinking of buying to make sure it truly is lightweight.

2. Full Brim

Ideally, you will want a straw hat with a full brim. The problem with baseball caps when you’re playing golf is that they don’t protect the back of your neck. Not all straw golf hats will either. So unless you have plenty of sunscreen on-hand at all times, you should opt for a full brim straw golf hat.

3. Secure Strap

Some straw hats will have an under-ship strap that will keep it from flying off. But some people may find that kind of strap uncomfortable. Others have a strap that tightens around the forehead. In any case, it’s important to make sure that any straw hat you buy can be secured so you don’t have to worry about it flopping around and distracting you as you swing.

4. Ventilation

Keep in mind that there are many different kinds of straw hats. Some have a tighter weave than others. For hats that have a tight weave, make sure they also have ventilation holes so your head can breathe.

5. The Right Fit

Last but not least, make sure your hat fits your head comfortably. If you are buying a hat online, make sure you secure an adequate return policy just in case the hat doesn’t fit properly.

Quick Facts:

  • 3 inch brim
  • Elastic headband

When we first received the Panama Jack Safari Straw Hat, we thought it wouldn’t last very long. That’s because it was so light. However, trunks out the rush straw that this hat is made up of is very resilient.

There is also an elastic sweatband on the inside that helps keep sweat beads at bay on hot days. While there is no chin strap, the elastic inner band does a good job of keeping the hat in place.

#4 – PUMA GOLF Men’s Nassau Straw Sunbucket Hat

Quick Facts:

  • Chin strap
  • Machine washable
  • Made from 100% straw

The first thing that anyone will notice when they pick his hat up is how light it is. The hat weighs only about 6 ounces because it is made out of pure straw. It has a light chin strip that runs up around the front of the crown though so that it stays snugly in place.

The design is pretty simple and has the Puma logo on the front of the crown. The underside of the brim is adorned with a Hawaiian style floral pattern – very beachy vibes. The brim is nice and wide but ventilation is lacking.

Options:

  • Small and large sizes

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Very light
  • Affordable
  • Wicks moisture well

Cons:

  • Tight weave and limited ventilation

Rating: 93/100

#5 – Wallaroo Hat Company Men’s Carter Fedora

Quick Facts:

  • 3” brim
  • Fedora style
  • Poly braid material

Ok so this one isn’t made of real straw. Still, our first impression of it was that it was lightweight and that’s what’s important. The Poly braid material also seems like it will last longer than actual straw too.

The leather crown strap is actually faux leather so not only is it animal-friendly, it’s also lighter than actual leather. Another cool thing about this hat is that it can easily fold down and fit inside a golf bag or suitcase. When you unfold it, the poly braid material doesn’t crease up either.

Options:

  • Medium and large sizes

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Internal drawstring
  • Easy to pack
  • Durable materials

Cons:

  • Not very breathable

Rating: 96/100

Quick Facts:

  • Soft fabric inner material
  • Palm leaf material
  • Elastic inner band

Our first impression of the Rising Phoenix Industries Palm Leaf Straw Trilby Wide Brim Fedora Golf Sun Hat was that it was very comfortable. In fact, that’s the best thing about it. The Palm leaf construction isn’t as light as some of the other hats we tested; but the soft fabric on the inside of the crown gives this hat a luxurious feel.

There are three head vents on each side of the crown. When there’s a light wind that blows by, it feels really nice. The style is really cool too. The leather crown strap gives it a sort of outback Australia feel.

Rating: 95/100

#7 – Sunday Afternoons Havana Hat

Quick Facts:

  • 90% paper straw
  • Folds up easily
  • 10% polyester

Our first thought was that the Sunday Afternoons Havana Hat wouldn’t stand the test of time or the rigors of the golf course because it’s made mostly from paper straw. But the 10% polyester helps reinforce it a bit.

The Sunday Afternoons Havana Hat is incredibly light even if it won’t last more than a few seasons. It looks nice and has an internal sweatband. Perhaps the best thing about it though is that it is affordable. Even if it starts to fall apart after a couple of seasons, you can easily replace it.

Options:

  • Tan, cream and black color options
  • Small, medium and large sizes

Pros:

  • Inexpensive
  • Lightweight
  • Many color options

Cons:

  • Hard to clean

Rating: 93/100

#8 – Panama Jack Men’s Matte Seagrass Safari Hat

Quick Facts:

  • Cotton inner band
  • Made from matte seagrass straw
  • 2 ½” brim

This hat looks more like a fedora than any other hat on our list. That means the brim is a little shorter and there is a gentle valley at the top of the crown along with an elastic crown band at the base to finish off the look.

At first, we thought the brim would be too short to protect from afternoon sun. However, the hat tilts easily without losing its grip on your head. The inner band is made from 3-pleat cotton so not only is it very comfortable on your forehead; it does a pretty good job of absorbing moisture as well. The fit could be a bit tighter but there are three sizes to choose from – just be aware that each one runs a bit big.

Options:

  • Medium, large and extra large sizes

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Great style if you like fedoras
  • Durable
  • Comfortable

Cons:

  • Can’t fold it up

Rating: 94/100

#9 – Coolibar UPF 50+ Men’s Kaden Crushable Ventilated Hat – Best for Sun Protection

Quick Facts:

  • Cotton/polyester blend
  • 3 inch brim
  • Adjustable chin strap

Our first impression of the Coolibar UPF 50+ Men’s Kaden Crushable Ventilated Hat was that it kept our heads incredibly cool. We made a point to test this hat on one of the hottest days in July and it did a marvelous job of blocking sun rays, allowing our heads to breath and not adding a weight burden to our necks.

This is a great hot if you tend to play in particularly hot conditions (we’re looking at you Arizona golfers). It’s not a straw hat by design but it at least gives the look and feel of a straw hat. Plus, the 70% cotton and 30% polyester blend just makes it more durable. As an added bonus, you can fold this hat down any which way and it will fold back up without creasing.

Options:

  • Small, large and extra large sizes
  • Khaki, gray and off-white colors

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Should last for a long time
  • Helps keep you cool on hot days
  • It stores in golf bags very easily

Cons:

  • Can’t be machine washed

Rating: 96/100

Quick Facts

  • Made from palm leaf straw
  • Elastic inner sweatband
  • Elastic closure

Right away, we really liked the Straw Cowboy Palm Leaf Hat because it had a nice, wide brim. As soon as we picked it up and started trying it on, we could tell that it was going to last a long time too. It’s made of palm leaf which is generally more durable than pressed straw.

There are three vent holes on either side of the crown so it allows your head to breathe well.

The brim is 3.5 inches and while you are limited in terms of size, the elastic enclosure should provide a snug fit for most people. This is a great hat for all-around sun protection; but it’s not the lightest.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Very durable
  • Great sun protection
  • Cowboy hat style

Cons:

  • A bit heavy

Rating: 95/100
