The Callaway Chrome Soft X LS 2022 Golf Balls were introduced in 2021 and the re-developed 2022 version promises a softer feel and more distance.

What surprised us the most about these balls is that they do indeed limit spin off the tee but they don’t inhibit short-game spin very much.

Off the driver face they actually don’t feel very soft. However, with our wedges and short irons they felt softer and the spin was a little more pronounced.

That’s why we chose the Callaway Chrome Soft X LS 2022 Golf Ball as our best overall choice – you get the best of both worlds essentially.

That all being said, you will have to have a moderate to fast swing speed in order to unlock the full distance potential of these balls.

Our slower swing speed testers weren’t getting the same distance from these balls as our fast swing speed testers; but that will be true of most balls.

#2 – Taylormade 2021 TP5X Golf Ball – Best Premium

It’s really hard to beat a urethane cover if you’re looking for a soft feel. The Taylormade 2021 TP5X Golf Balls feel very soft off the driver face and maintain a soft feel throughout the bag.

They have a 5-layer design that delivers distance off the tee and great performance around the pin.

Most of our testers really loved this ball for their low spin and tight shot dispersion off the tee. A lot of our testers also noted that these balls were stable even in the wind.

They feature a Tour Flight dimple patterns that really helps them hang in the air when you pure them.

The urethane cover also really came in handy with the wedges and short irons. You can almost feel these balls grip the grooves which allows for acute spin control.

We really liked these balls but the high price will probably scare a lot of players away.

• Great for fast swing speed players
• Good short-game control

#3 – Vice Drive Golf Ball – Best Budget Option

If you’re looking for a pure distance ball and you have a moderate to slow swing speed, the Vice Drive Golf Balls would be a great fit for you.

These are great practice balls and they are plenty durable too. They have a Surlyn so they are very durable. They will last you through multiple range sessions for sure.

As opposed to other Vice balls, the Vice Drive Golf Balls have a bit more spin control with the short irons; but it’s nothing to write home about in the end.

These are 2-piece balls that perform really well off the tee but you’re not going to want to use them in competition.

But if you are simply looking to send missiles down the fairway, these balls are a great options. They are really affordable too.

You can get a dozen of these balls for just around $20. The Vice Drive Golf Balls are great if you have a swing speed of 80 mph or slower.

#4 – Titleist AVX 2022 Golf Ball – Best for Low Spin With the Driver

The Titleist AVX 2022 Golf Balls have a three-piece construction and an extremely soft cast urethane elastomer cover.

These feel really soft off the driver face without feeling too squishy. And they produce really low spin off the driver as well.

These would be great balls for anyone who is struggling with distance from the tee. While they don’t offer the same level of short game control as the Pro V1 balls, they really weren’t built for that.

They were designed to reduce spin on drives and they certainly succeed at that.

What our testers really liked about these balls was how responsive they were. On drives and even touch shots the Titleist AVX 2022 Golf Balls react really quickly.

You can feel them enough to get good control out of them with the longer irons and woods.

#5 – Srixon Soft Feel – Best for High Handicappers

The Srixon Soft Feel golf balls certainly live up to their name. They feel soft with every club in the bag.

Our testers especially liked how nice they felt off the putter face. They called these balls soft and responsive even with the putter.

The main issue that we had with these balls was consistency. While they are pretty affordable at just about $23 for a dozen, you are going to get different performance from almost every ball in the set.

Durability was also an issue as these balls tend to scuff easily.

With that all being said though, these balls deliver very low spin off the driver face. With the fairway woods they also provide low spin and tight shot dispersion.

Workability is sacrificed a bit but the low spin and soft feel are what really make these balls advantageous for high handicap players.

• Good wood performance
• Affordable

#6 – TaylorMade Project A – Best for Mid Handicappers

These balls are a great middle ground if you are looking for a combination of moderate spin off the driver face and the same from your scoring irons.

The two-piece design doesn’t allow for the lowest spin off the tee but it really helps around.

You get a firm-ish feel from the 70 compression core which mid to low handicappers will like. If you have a swing speed in the 70’s then you will probably want to avoid this ball.

But if you are a moderate swing speed player, you will like these balls.

Our first impression of them was that they hold their line very well in the wind. The flight is stable and the urethane cover feels really nice.

They are a bit costly at about $42 for a dozen but they will benefit the game of mid handicappers nicely.

#7 – Bridgestone Tour B RX – Best for Low Handicappers

For players with fast swing speeds, the Bridgestone Tour B RX delivers terrific distance off the tee.

The spin is almost non-existent but thanks to the “Reactiv” cover, it still spins pretty well around the green. We really liked that you can work this ball pretty much anyway you want.

That’s what makes it especially advantageous for low handicap players. Our testers also noticed that the Bridgestone Tour B RX really help with side spin off the woods and hybrids.

They produce a consistent flight and will work with you in pretty much any situation.

They did feel on the firm side on chip shots and bump-and-runs; but again lower handicap players will probably appreciate that.

They offer a great bite on short shots and will deliver at least adequate distance for fast swing speed players.

#8 – Titleist Tour Speed 2022 Golf Ball

What we really liked about these balls was that they were durable. After a long range session there were no scuff marks on the thermoplastic urethane cover.

They have a soft feel with the woods and offer very tight shot dispersion.

Too tight sometimes. Our better testers were having some trouble hooking and fading these balls. But that’s good news if you have trouble staying on the fairway.

They have a compression of 78 so they are not the softest balls on the market but they should be soft enough for mid to high handicap players.

They are a good balance of distance/low spin when compared to the Titleist Tour Soft and Pro V1 golf balls.

Pros:

• Good for mid to low handicap players
• Tight shot dispersion
• Good accuracy

Cons:

• Not very workable
• Not the softest Titleist balls

What first impressed us about these balls was the apex height we were getting from them. Carry distance was almost immediately improved across the board with these balls.

The Srixon Q-Star Tour Golf Balls have a compression rating of 72 so they feel pretty soft off of all the clubs.

They also feature a gradient core design which really helps with energy transfer. They play long and round the green they afford the player good spin control.

In fact, the short game is where these balls really shine. You can almost feel them dig into the grooves on your wedges.

These aren’t the most expensive Srixon balls but they perform very similarly to Srixon’s tour grade golf balls.

Pros:

• Decent price
• Great short game control
• Soft feel

Cons:

• Not stable in the wind
• Not great for high handicap players

#10 – Mizuno RB566V Golf Ball

The Mizuno RB566V Golf Balls were designed to spin low off the driver and high off the scoring irons.

That’s a tall order for sure but they pulled it off nicely. While you will need at least a moderate swing speed to get adequate distance from them off the tee, they offer good spin control with the short irons.

Even our high handicap testers were working the ball like pros with their short irons and the Mizuno RB566V Golf Balls.

While we’re not huge fans of ionomer as a cover material, the Mizuno RB566V Golf Balls won us over for their low spin off the tee and with our woods.

They produce a stable, mid-flight which is why we say they are better for moderate to fast swing speeds – you won’t get much carry help from them.

Pros:

• Piercing trajectory
• Low drag
• Soft feel

Cons:

• Not great for high handicappers
• Scratch easily

#11 – Snell MTB X

Snell is a relatively new name in the world of golf but we were instantly drawn to the Snell MTB X balls because of the cast ionomer cover.

We really liked the feel, durability and playability of these balls. They aren’t the softest balls on the market; but they would be great for low handicappers with fast swing speeds.

In terms of distance, you don’t have to be a pro to get down the fairway with these balls.

Our testers with swing speeds under 80mph were able to get drive distances in the range of 240 with these balls. The same could not be said with the irons though.

Only our low handicap testers were able to get good distance with a 7-iron out of these balls.

The mantle layer of these balls is the thickest of any of the balls we tested for this list. It helps produce a low/mid flight that is very stable in the wind.

Pros:

• Good driver distance
• Stable in the wind
• Durable

Cons:

• Expensive
• Poor carry distance

We end our list with a ball that can adapt to pretty much every swing type and speed. The “Reactiv” urethane cover material actually adjusts depending on how hard you hit it.

Off the tee, these balls produce very low overall spin and side spin was especially muted.

Around the green, you can feel these balls play off the grooves of your wedges. These would be great for any player with at least a moderate swing speed.

They aren’t the longest balls for sure but they provide enough distance and short-game spin to be valuable to a wide range of players.

• Great for players of different skill sets
• Helps with side spin
• Affordable

Cons:

• Low flight
• Poor stability in wind
