Just because a driver plays long doesn’t always mean it will be good for high handicappers. The Taylormade RBZ driver combines different technologies into one package to create one of the most comprehensive distance drivers we have ever come across. With the RBZ drivers, the company tried to attack distance and forgiveness from multiple angles.

 

Taylormade RBZ Driver Overview

 

The Taylormade RBZ driver combines a low/forward CG placement with a redesigned face and head.

 

The bulk of the weight in this driver sits towards the low/front of the club head. This essentially eliminates spin off the tee which reduces wind resistance and increases distance. The crown is also crimped in some areas to save weight and improve aerodynamics.

 

Taylormade also claims that the RBZ driver will add 9 yards to your drive on average. The Taylormade RBZ also features an adjustable loft sleeve.

 

Taylormade RBZ Vs. RBZ Stage 2 Driver

The Stage 2 RBZ driver has a lot of the same features as the original Taylormade RBZ driver. There are moderate improvements such as a blacked-out club face that is supposed to reduce glare at address. The Stage 2 RBZ driver is also said to be aerodynamic than the original.

 

The RBZ Stage 2 driver may be a good option if you are looking specifically to increase your club head speed. Otherwise, if you can find the original RBZ for cheaper, that’s probably the better option.

 

What Type of Driver is it?

 

There’s no mistaking it: the Taylormade RBZ driver is a distance driver through and through.

 

It has an oversized 460CC head and an enlarged 4100 square-millimeter club face so finding the sweet spot and launching missiles down the fairway should be no problem. This is a big, beefy and powerful driver that high handicappers will be able to use effectively after just a few swings.

 

How Forgiving is the Taylormade RBZ for High Handicappers?

In a word: very. The oversized head, expanded sweet spot and aerodynamic design will do everything to make it easier to smash the ball and get great distance.

 

Our high handicap testers had no problem reaching average drive distances in the mid 220 yard range. They noted that the Taylormade RBZ allowed them to feel more confident in their swings.

 

Taylormade RBZ Options

 

The standard Taylormade RBZ driver is set to 10.5 degrees of loft. However, the hosel sleeve allows for a combination of 12 different lofts, lie angles and club face angles. You can tune the loft up or down by 1.5 degrees which opens up a lot of different shot-shaping options.

 

The Taylormade RBZ also comes standard with a nice Fujikura Rocket Fuel 50 graphite shaft. This is a very light shaft at just 50 grams.

 

Distance Assessment

 

The performance of the Taylormade RBZ is highlighted by impressive launch and excellent carry distance.

 

This driver will take a lot of the work out of your swing. The massive sweet spot is easy to nail and the driver takes care of the rest. While we can’t confirm that it will add 9 yards to your drive, we can certainly confirm that it will add at least a marginal amount of yardage.

 

Accuracy & Consistency Assessment

 

We wish the face were made from a higher-grade material to increase consistency.

 

The adjustable loft sleeve certainly helps with accuracy as it lets you shape your drive to a high degree. The only thing we really didn’t like about the Taylormade RBZ was that distance seemed inconsistent.

 

Is It Priced for Beginners?

 

A new Taylormade RBZ driver will cost about $160 which is a little on the pricey side but you can get used ones for half that price.

Cleveland Launch XL Lite

The Cleveland Launch XL Lite is a stripped down version of the standard XL driver.

 

By “stripped down” we mostly mean lighter. It is actually 12 grams lighter than the standard XL driver and most of the weight savings come from a bonded hosel as opposed to an adjustable one. The lighter weight makes this an excellent choice not just for beginners; but for anyone with a slow to moderate swing speed.

Cobra Air X Driver

The Cobra Air X is only 277 grams and is outfitted with a lightweight stock shaft.

 

In addition to the lightweight design, the Cobra Air X driver also has heel biased weighting to help correct your slice. We also really like the looks of this driver both in the bag and at point of address. It has a cool black and red color scheme and an oversized head.

Final Assessment

While the Taylormade RBZ driver is lacking some helpful features like an adjustable weight, we were really impressed with the effortless distance.

 

Whether  you have a moderate swing speed, have been struggling with accuracy or simply need more distance, the Taylormade RBZ would be a solid choice.

 

The inconsistency in distance can be a bit frustrating at times; but we’d be willing to bet that if we had more time with this driver, that problem would straighten itself out.
