Are Ping Rapture V2 Irons Still Good in 2023? Are They Forgiving for High Handicappers?

“The Ping Rapture V2’s  are 2009 Golf Digest Hot List silver medal-winning irons. SO do they still hold up in 2023?”

All you need to do to figure out what kind of irons these are is take a look at them. The Ping Rapture V2 irons are oversized and look every bit the part whether they’re in the bag or behind the ball.

The Ping Rapture V2 irons were definitely aimed at high handicap players when they were released back in September of 2008. And they were a hit with that market of  players for years to come.

But how do these irons hold up against more modern game improvement irons? We wanted to see for ourselves so we tested these irons against a newer Ping model. We also wanted to provide our testing insight to help our readers decide whether the Ping Rapture V2’s are a good choice.

Are the Ping Rapture V2 Irons Still Good?

“The progressive nature of this set is really what helps them endure after all these years.”

It’s hard to argue with the effectiveness of a nice, progressive set of irons. The Ping Rapture V2 irons feature more offset in the longer irons to help higher handicap players square up. The shorter irons have noticeably less offset to preserve workability where you need it the most; in scoring range.

The Ping Rapture V2 irons feature a couple outdated features like the Custom Tuning Port; but overall these kinds of features don’t hurt the performance. The Ping Rapture V2’s also feature a multi-material construction that makes them a bit more reminiscent of modern Ping irons.

So in the end you get a bit of old and new with these irons. So are the Ping Rapture V2 irons still good? If you’re a high handicapper, then absolutely.

Are the Ping Rapture V2 Irons Forgiving for High Handicappers?

“Forgiveness is something that these irons offer a ton of.”

First of all, these are oversized irons that were billed as “super game improvement irons” when they were first released. So they have large head profiles and a very comforting face if you are a high handicapper.

The long irons are especially forgiving because they have more offset which makes it easier to close up the face. The Ping Rapture V2’s also feature tungsten soles that will draw your swing down with a lower CG. This is a comfortable and congenial CG position for newer players because it will help them sweep the ball up and get it airborne.

Ping Rapture V2 Vs Ping G400 Irons

“The Ping G400 irons feature more modern appointments like a hydropearl finish and a COR-Eye face.”

It’s also worth mentioning that the Ping G400 irons are more compact than the Ping Rapture V2’s. The Ping G400’s play hotter off the face as well. If you are a faster swing speed player, you will surely appreciate the more reactive face material of the G400’s.

The G400 irons also work better in dewy conditions and in the rough thanks to the hydropearl finish. While not as forgiving as the Ping Rapture V2’s, the G400 irons may appeal more to mid handicappers.

Ping Rapture V2 First Impressions

“You can’t help but notice the size of these irons.”

That was certainly the first thing we noticed about them. The Ping Rapture V2 irons also have a deep cavity area that you can see at address in the mid and short irons. It’s a bit distracting; but it’s also a feature that helps increase launch and distance.

Ping Rapture V2 Key Technology

“By today’s standards, the technology that went into the Ping Rapture V2 irons is pretty dated.

But that doesn’t mean the features don’t work for high handicap players.”

Multi-Material Construction: Stainless steel was used for the body, titanium for the faces and tungsten weights were placed in the toe.

Custom Tuning Port: The Ping Rapture V2 irons feature a low-profile custom tuning port that contributes to the low CG of these clubs.

Cavity Back Design: The deep cavity backs allow the face to flex more at impact resulting in improved ball speeds.

Who Should Buy the Ping Rapture V2 Irons?

“These irons would be great for beginners and high handicappers who are looking to increase ball speed, launch and forgiveness.”

These irons resist twisting very well so they will also help you shoot straighter. Mid and low handicap players will surely be repelled by these irons for their lack of workability. They also perform poorly if you have a fast swing speed. But those aren’t the kinds of players these irons were built for.

Based on our testing, it’s clear that the Ping Rapture V2 irons are still a viable option for beginners and high handicappers.
