Are Ping G15 Irons Still Good? Are They Forgiving for High Handicappers?

iron main4

“The Ping G15 irons certainly aren’t the newest irons on the market. And some would even say that they have been eclipsed by models like the G425 and G410’s. However, Ping is one of the most reputable golf club manufacturers in the world so at the very least, the Ping G15 irons deserve a revisit.”

And revisit them we did. We went out and tested the Ping G15 irons on a standalone basis and compared them to a set of modern Ping irons. By now, you probably know that Ping G15 irons sell for much cheaper than modern Ping iron sets.

But is this a case of “you get what you pay for” or do the Ping G15 irons still have legitimate value for today’s high handicap golfer? Let’s dissect the testing results.

Are the Ping G15’s Still Good?

“The Ping G15 irons reminded us a lot of some of Taylormade’s older game-improvement irons.”

In particular, the sole width, the depth of the rear cavity and the profile of the head reminded us of the older M2 irons. The shape of the Ping G15’s will make them an instant favorite for high handicappers.

And being Ping irons, they are certainly durable. In our opinion, the Ping G15 irons are still a good choice if you are looking for a set of game-improvement irons that you can rely on season after season.

Of course, if you stick with the game of golf and get really serious about it, you will definitely want to upgrade. But you still may find that some of the longer irons in this set still have a place in your bag well after you break 100.

Are the Ping G15’s Forgiving for High Handicappers?

“One of the things we really liked about the Ping G15’s for high handicappers was the width of the sole.”

Our high handicap testers almost unanimously dubbed the Ping G15’s the best anti-chunking irons they have ever swung. They have an extra wide sole and considerable rear undercut channel.

For our testers this made for much smoother turf interaction and high launch – even from the cabbage. There is also more mass in the perimeter of the heads of the Ping G15’s which helps to straighten out the ball even if it is hit away from the center.

The lofts are moderately weak so these irons would be a good fit for any player struggling to get the ball in the air. The 3-iron in this set produced an average distance of 189 yards.

Ping G15’s Vs Ping G410’s

“The Ping G410 irons have a noticeably shorter blade length and a more compact head compared to the Ping G15.”

The Ping G410’s also have a slightly lower launch angle but more effective perimeter weighting. Weights in the toe screw and shaft tip are more effective for resisting twist and producing ball speed on errant strikes.

However, our high handicap testers had a better go of it with the Ping G15. The larger heads make them inherently more forgiving even if they don’t offer the same kind of workability as the G410’s.

Ping G15 First Impressions

“The first thing we thought when we tested these clubs was that they were very reminiscent of the 2010 era of irons.”

They took us back to the first decade of the new millennium because they have the same profile as many of the game-improvement irons that were being produced in that era.

And that certainly isn’t a bad thing. There is no fluff with the Ping G15 irons. The perimeter weighting, cambered sole, deep undercuts and slightly more mass placed out near the toe are now considered essential forgiveness features. The Ping G15 irons certainly hold their own against modern game-improvement irons.

Ping G15 Key Technology

“The technology used to make the Ping G15 is fairly simple but still effective.”

Cambered Sole: The larger sole width and the cambered design allows for amazingly smooth turf interaction that just hovers above the surface.

Custom Tuning Port: The customized weighting system allowed Ping to move weight to the perimeter and optimize CG in the long irons. The result is considerable forgiveness in the irons that usually give players the hardest time.

Deep Undercut Cavity: The deep undercut cavities of these irons work in tandem with the weak lofts to produce towering apex height and maximum forgiveness on a wide variety of lies.

Who Should Buy the Ping G15 Irons?

Ping G15 Irons1

“The Ping G15 irons are classic game-improvement irons that would still be a very good fit for high handicappers or even people picking up the game for the very first time.”

In our opinion, the Ping G15 irons have aged like a fine wine. They still hold up against modern game-improvement irons. What’s more is that they were very well-made. They are durable so even if you picked up a used set, you would still get a lot of good out of them.

The launch is a little high for our liking but that shouldn’t be a problem for any high handicapper. These aren’t the longest irons we have ever seen but they will do a lot for any high handicapper who is lacking confidence on long approaches.

The Ping G15’s will encourage you to finagle your way to more eagles even as a high handicapper. And because the longer irons produce a very steep descent angle, they would still be viable for mid handicappers.
