Are Cleveland RTX 4 Wedges Good for High Handicappers?

The Cleveland RTX 4 wedges are offered in a myriad of choices ranging from moderate bounce and loft to low bounce. They feature a meticulous face-milled design that promises deeper, sharper and longer-lasting grooves.

It should be noted before we go any further that the Cleveland RTX 4 were inspired by tour-caliber wedges but made for the everyday golfer. As such, we get some premium features in a package that may be viable for high handicappers.

Cleveland RTX 4 Wedges Overview

The Cleveland RTX 4 basically have something for every swing type. Whether you have a steep or shallow attack angle, the Cleveland RTX 4’s have you covered.

No matter what your swing type though, you’ll be happy to know that all the different sole grind versions of the Cleveland RTX 4’s come with what Cleveland calls Rotex Face technology. The Rotex face milling process includes traditional milling, laser milling and tour zip grooves to top it all off.

This results in acute spin control around the pin. Some of our high handicap testers were able to hit chip shots that made them look like tour pros. Whether you need the ball to stop dead or spin back, these wedges will work great for you.

What Type of Wedges Are They?

The Cleveland RTX 4 wedges aren’t exactly game-improvement clubs; but they do have some performance aspects that would be especially useful to beginners and high handicappers.

In particular, the different sole grinds all have one thing in common: they interact with the turf very well. You get less chunk and more ball with these wedges. We also liked that the sole line from the hosel was more or less straight.

This makes for a much less jarring transition from irons to wedges. The CG is also placed in very specific spots depending on the loft and sole grind you choose. So in theory, you can select a CG that will give you the highest MOI and forgiveness.

How Forgiving Are the Cleveland RTX 4 Wedges for High Handicappers?

Again, it will depend on the grind and lofts you choose.

For beginners and high handicappers, we would definitely recommend the “mid sole” grind. We found this option to be the best overall. Also, be sure to choose strong lofts; but not so strong that they create gapping problems for your other wedges and irons.

With a decently strong loft, you will be able to land the ball dead on the green. The mid sole Cleveland RTX 4 wedge grind will also help you if you tend to leave large divots in the turf or if you need more stability on your full shots.

Workability Assessment

The Cleveland RTX 4 wedges are extremely workable thanks to progressive back shaping that tune CG according to loft.

You can really feel the control on chips and full shots. When you choose the perfect sole grind and loft for your swing style, you can basically work the ball like the pros. While side-to-side workability is naturally limited, the Cleveland RTX 4’s will help you get as up or down as you need.

Accuracy & Consistency Assessment

The meticulously milled grooves on the Cleveland RTX 4 wedges makes them very consistent.

While we only had a few testing sessions with the Cleveland RTX 4 wedges, we can tell that the grooves will last for many seasons.

They offer acute spin control on firm or soft turf. Consistency was also pretty impressive. Launch and distance could be accurately predicted which made for easy gapping and club selection.

Are they Priced for Beginners?

Each wedge in the set will cost you about $100 on average. So while they are not the most affordable wedges on the market, they still represent a good investment for beginners.
